:-bd I noticed he doesn't say much on the design of the gearbox either in this film or one of his earlier ones that I could see. Wonder if this is deliberate to get some interest from one of the manus? Kind of makes me think that that's how all bikes should be, chain nicely out of the glop and easy...

Always fancied one myself as I figure they'd be great for overall strength and balance. I suspect I'd smash myself up trying to hop across a gap or something though....

Re: Bivvy a month 2020.
October done with a nice trip through Dumfries and Galloway to see my folks in their holiday cottage. I drove down to Moffat on Wednesday afternoon, typically entering a large cloud on arrival. It was fairly damp pedaling up out of Beattock into the forest on Cycle Route 10 and as I gained height th...

This doesn't help my quest for a third orange badge though  Perhaps I need to brace myself for a winter attempt. My understanding is that Wales has a population of 3 million and 400 people in hospital - I'm really struggling to see the reasoning behind another full lock-down. Politics. Don't worry Scotland will doubtless be joining you very soon..... I'm trying to think of a single useful thing a "leader...

170's all round for me (185cm high with longish legs) Started on the Jones to increase its woeful ground clearance and then did all the others as it seems to favour my dodgy knees - probably more psychological than physiological tho.... Re: BB200 2020
I'm oot. Knee injury from the Cairngorms loop is recovering but still a ways to go and given that there is a fair bit of climbing on this thing I'm playing the sensible wimp card. Add to that the hassles of the journey down (I'm not keen on using service stations to go to the loo and don't know enou...

Re: Nighttime riding, fear and loathing.
Generally not been much of a problem on road and I overcame off road fears after buying some decent lights so that I could see what I was about. Going through very remote landscapes I've no issues (eg. the Cairngorms) but I'm slightly nervous about farmyards etc (even on an ROW) mainly due to my ove...

I 'groundproofed' the gpx track on my OS mapping thingy by tweaking it onto the line on aerial photos. It was a good way of doing route homework. I fully expect this line to be way of the actual line due to inaccuracies of the OS aerial photos....hey ho..

just a quick note, to say i rode the Bealach Na Ba. it was pretty horrendous on my surly ecr with 3'' tyres. also it pissed it down the whole way up and down, with zero views from the top................ ace :-bd Good effort. I've contemplated it on the 29+ just to ride the ace trail out the back o...

Re: Remember when we were discussing ...
I know we like bikepacking on here, but taking the wider view, would it be better to promote backpacking / hillwalking as a starter for 10? less kit, less need for expensive lightweight kit to make it fun, more accessible, easier to do. But gets people out there and into outdoorsy stuff without havi...

Re: Do you still cycle tour "traditionally"?
Yup. I use bikepacking kit as I'm still looking for fun road or track descents which panniers detract from a bit. But always nice to do easy riding, stop lots, use digs or campsites instead of a ditch, and drink lots of nice beer.

Re: Top loop of the HT550 vs Cairngorms Loop? Recommendations which please
I'd give the top loop of the HT a miss as the riding isn't that great in places. Scenery is though but best done in a dry spring. Deeside Trail for ace riding or Cairngorms outer loop for easier riding and good scenery. Much better chance of good weather in the 'gorms than the north west

Hmm, looks interesting - wonder how permanent the repairs would be with glueless patches. Also interesting is a 29+ size - Odd given Schwalbe don't actually do a 29+ tyre. https://road.cc/content/review/schwalbe-aerothan-inner-tube-277797 Hopefully schwalbe will sort a better repair system out. Whoops - 4 1/2 hrs of course...... Also note I was stopped for 6 hrs in bivvy which roughly adds up to 31 1/2 hrs or thereby It does show how much faster than me you were riding :-bd I finished an hour ahead of you but you had a 6 hour bivi, without that you'd have been round in 25 1/2 hours....
