Re: Changing pads whilst out

No, you can't exert enough force with the short handles, and it wouldn't be a clean cut anyway. It wouldn't need to be if the cable was fitted and you were just getting rid of excess. Glad to know that even the expensive ones can't achieve it either though! Maybe I'll pre cut the spare I carry and ...

Re: Quick/easy access bikepacking style luggage

You're probably not, it's tougher when the bag is very full. I generally attach it open, holding the dowel. Make sure you fully pull the springs back, grab the dowel and shove it in, then let go of the springs and listen for it to click both sides.....then make sure it's actually in both sides rathe...

Re: DIY wheel building

I have one of those, still prefer the spoke version as the nipple never drops off into the rim, and the bit never pops off the nipple and starts gouging into the spoke hole either. I'll use it if after the nipples have been fitted I can see the wheel is still significantly short on tension, to save ...

Agree with all the above. It’s with making or buying a nipple driver to make sure you get each spoke started evenly. There’s all you need to know about that in RM’s book Having built a few wheels, the bold will help massively. I've spent hours trying to get wheels as good as they already are after ...

Re: Trad Carradice saddle bags (user experience and MYOG related)

Alex, that's useful to know, I got 328g from their site for the sport version. It's a nice minimal rack idea but I only want to carry 900g-1kg of bivi gear on a light 700c bike so any metalwork seems a bit ott. Ah, just realised there's the non QR version for saddles with loops on, that'd be a bit ...

Re: Quick/easy access bikepacking style luggage

At this kind of volume and shape, what are the advantages over panniers (aside from not needing a full rack) if you have a reasonably wide load anyway + the weight is higher up? How easy are the super c and barley to remove and return? I know they have some quick release models.. Well it's 23L in t...

Very slight chance this might work, do you know top tube (and hopefully also 'virtual top tube'*) measurement?

 I'll pass that on to the maid! I'm actually always carrying a ready padded worm in case it's needed to plug a tyre, the that's always very close to hand, either in back pocket or top tube bag. I'm mostly road, but still less worried about weight than ease of access and not having to cram everything in in a perfect order (and never being able to get at, say the puncture repair kit as it'll be the law of the sod be at the bottom). With this mindset I mostly use Carradice's - Barley for long...

Re: Anyone tried putoline chain wax ?

I'm more road focused, but do plenty of wet riding and mix in mud/sand/'gravel' regularly. I've been waxing all the chains for a long time, and haven't noticed any major rusting (in fact, it's worst on my 'commuter' chain which is the only one I don't wax, but that's likely as I don't look after it ...

Re: Gravelw#nker mudguards

We've got Bluemels 53mm on a similar spec bike, they go over Byways (just) and don't look too silly over 38x700 GravelKings either. So far they haven't snapped or gummed up, but it's not been ridden in really deep mud (where the bike would likely be outgunned, and I'd imagine most mudguards of full ...

I was going to say, 1mm is within the error margin of the calculator!

At least you haven't done what I did and trusted the seller of a rim to give the correct ERD, buy the spokes before measuring it yourself and....'you can guess the rest', as Bryan Ferry would say...

I've got this one which is an interesting design, but in use is fairly good (thread it over a small finger and it almost gives you a slotted knuckle to push onto the spoke, easy to fit in between spokes also) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-AERO-WIDE-SPOKE-HOLDER/dp/B00NU1RHHK?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSH...

Good thread, I'm currently commuting in Endura Humvees but those Keela look tempting. Are they cut tight, or would be 'sprinter's build' amongst us have a chance of getting in them without sizing up?
