Re: Todays ride

Extra day off for me after the end of school jollies, so with no work and no domestic duties planned, what better than that good old ride from the doorstep Mary Towneley Loop? Didnt do one last year so felt even more compelled to face the joys of Rooley Moor Road, endless uneven flags and cobbles - ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

Some nice trips indeed - I can only add another scrambled month end trundle to the local woods, but very nice it was on a still, warm evening with suspiciously few midgies.. Anyway, bedded down at 11, wood mouse in the tent for company briefly, woodpidgeons for alarm duties in the morning - slept un...

Re: What's the weekend got in store?

If all goes well I'll get a BAM in on Saturday....working sat and sun, then off to eskdale on Monday for four nights, with bikes, so hopefully a big hill and a bit of "shralping" ( I believe it's called) with son. Also time for some swimming, walking and 🍺!

Re: Todays ride

Mary Townley-ish....the bivvy that wasn't... The plan was an overnight Mary Townley loop, missing out the most pointless, gate ridden sections, also varying the route to take account of my after work start from Hardcastle Crags. I reckoned somewhere around Crag Quarry/Top of Leach would provide a re...

Re: Wanted : 26" Suspension Fork

If it is (really) cheap and cheerful, I have a marzocci Marathon 100mm for nowt - calderdale's not too far if you want to pick it up, or for postage; it needs servicing, lock out switch is missing, hasn't been used in oooh, five years...

@johnclimber - I don't know anything about aqueduct protocol (if it exists) but what on earth do you do if you meet a bigger boat going the other way?
Great looking trip!

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

What better way to avoid the heat of the hottest day night combo of the year than to BAM high up in search of a breeze. Well as high up as Calderdale allows..At 8.30 pm it was still awfy hot in the valley - one hour later on the moor edge it's still awfy hot, and no breeze to take the edge of the he...

Re: More Bothy bother

The Galloway bothies (and others no doubt)have been misused for years...my pals and me would regularly go to shiel o' castlemaddy, backhill o' bush or white laggan for a "party" (ahem) in the eighties. We always took our rubbish away, never abused or denied other users and turned the music...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

As the rain and gloom abated, off I went for June BAM... Headed up out of the Calder Valley and north on the Mary Townley Loop by Gorple and Widdop, and over to Hurstwood. The sun set over Pendle Hill.... https://i.imgur.com/hWKILHn.jpg And then I met Maoro (maybe excuse my italian spelling!)who is ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

A sad two day trip north to Aboyne, to clear out my late aunts house and hand over keys to new owners, gave me an opportunity for a bivvy, ...and a big drive. Drove up Tuesday night, cleared house Wednesday morning (not on my own thankfully) then drove to Ballater for lunch. Packed up the bike and h...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

April! So pleased i've got this far and tbh its become a far easier thing; I can decide i'm going, get sorted and pack the bike and be out the door in an hour - and i've ditched the superfluous stuff. This time I set of without a specific spot in mind, just a vague direction (stoodley pike-ish). Fou...

Re: Todays ride

Lovely pics summittoppler - Slippery hill of the witch is one of the best hill names anywhere, twice ended up knackered on there after long hot days climbing long easy routes on Craig yr ysfa. Now I'm envious as nearly all of my rides are local loops in the South Pennines - not as spectacular but st...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

March BAM passed with a cold starlit night in the south Pennines. Once again, very local, only three miles from home and handy for work this morning. Must get a weekend night soon and venture further afield. Tried the wee tent this time thinking the extra warmth would be useful - not sure if the con...

After a few weeks poorly, being diagnosed with a stomach ulcer/H pylorii and now full of antibiotics, managed a circuit over Stoodley Pike and back down one of Hebden Bridges rootier descents. 3 hours and two food breaks for ten miles! Managed to get Februarys bivvy in on a clear balmy night - perfect for the cave i've been eyeing up for years. Left home at nine, reached the cave at half past, happily cocooned by ten, reading and sipping a warm drink. Moonrise straight through the cave (more of a howff formed by a perched slab of ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

Hi - first post on here, decided to add some impetus to my outdoor activities and challenge myself to bivvy a month........ Never combined mountain biking with bivvying or camping - so cobbled together some gear, some purpose bought for bikepacking, some out of the back of the camping cupboard. Load...
