Re: PSA: Montane Prism Jackets

Fjern is a Sports Pursuit own brand, so the ‘savings’ offered on there should be taken with a pinch of salt. The quality is ok but not amazing. A montane prism at that price is much better value I’d say. Good to know, thanks. I'll keep to my BLS mantra. I'm sure the Nanopuff is good for another yea...

Re: PSA: Montane Prism Jackets

Thanks for the heads up. I've been on the look out for something to replace a very aged and slightly too big Patagonia NanoPuff. I also noticed a Fjern insulated jacket on sale at SportPursuit for £70. Something called Octa® Active Insulation. No idea how this compares to Primaloft. There seems to b...

Re: Bye bye access rights

We don’t ban picnics on the beach. Our community feels ownership and we gather to litter pick. Next week I’m doing a harbour clean via kayak. We accept that there will be transgressions but mobilise communities instead of moaning and banning. I’m quite inspired by how it works as locals feel the se...

Re: Bye bye access rights

Somewhat, but not completely, off topic: there used to be a tradition in respect of Dartmoor common land that if you could build a house in a day and fire going in the hearth by the time the sun went down, it was yours to keep as freeholder. The last instance of this happening was in 1835 and the co...

Re: Wst Kernow Way complete.

I'm sure much will depend upon the attitudes of the landowners and also the popularity of the route. Ultimately it could end up costing all involved considerable amounts of money. Possibly couldn't have happened at a worse time though ... feelings seem to be running quite high in many quarters. The...

Re: Wst Kernow Way complete.

What is most interesting to me about this route is that it contains several sections which are not currently classified as Rights of Way. This isn't just a few hundred metres of footpath, that you could choose to push your bike along, but sections of several miles such as the Tinner's Way between Ze...

Re: Access rights in Wales - the moment of decison

Collect a variety of examples of perfectly rideable tracks that are either on access land or are footpaths but are not legally rideable by bike. Are you after ones in Wales, or will examples from England help? They need to be in Wales as it's a decision for Welsh ministers that will only apply in W...

Access rights in Wales - the moment of decision

I know the Trails for Wales campaign has been discussed here before. The working group that was sent away to chew over the difficult decisions has delivered its report and - disappointingly - they've fudged the difficult decisions, effectively passing them back to ministers at the Welsh Government. ...

Re: Hello and mat questions

The folding closed cell mats aren't bad at all. Decathlon do one for £14.99 Forclaz Trek 100. Very warm and the dimpled texture is more comfortable than ye olde roll up Karrimat. Light and indestructible, just a bit bulky.

Re: Harvesting electrons - advice sought

Not sure I've reached a conclusion on which dynamo to usb converter is the best choice, but charging to a power bank rather than a device seems to be highly recommended. That's always the advice Kerry at K-Lite gives with regard to maximising efficiency Jack. More efficient than direct charging or ...

Re: Harvesting electrons - advice sought

Thanks all for the excellent advice - much appreciated. @Asposium's multiple power banks and special charger with two or three 18W sockets is the way forward for maximising the use of brief stops at cafes etc. The mass is in the battery cells themselves, so two 10,000 mAh won't be dramatically heavi...

Every time I pump up my mat and pillow (both Exped in case you're interested) I can't help but think of this passage from A Short Walk In the Hindu Kush, where Eric Newby and his friend meet Wilfred Thesiger, the celebrated British explorer and soldier. Interesting character, very much of his time, ...

Harvesting electrons - advice sought

There are various devices that I rely on to do my research work on the bike - GPS device, smartphone (mostly for maps), camera. Three days has become the limit until I need a recharge somewhere. I carry four camera batteries and a 10,000mha power bank. Before the covid situation things were easier a...

Re: Cooking pots query

Trangia Duossal series are good. It's bonded alu and stainless so supposedly combines the best characteristics of each. And no non stick teflon type coatings that tend to delaminate.

I have a small size Duossal frying pan which works well for actual cooking, with the right stove. Pots also available.

Re: OT question for the over 50's.

I'm not quite at the half century, but as I make my final approach I've realised that any reduction in pure physical capability is more than compensated for by: (1) a moderate increase in knowing how to do stuff - with the general caveat that the more you know the more you realise you don't know, an...

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

I think the point Sean makes is more nuanced than that. It is the fact that the act of offering help can be seen to be demeaning when crossing the gender divide. I've heard this said by women in my road club when help has been offered to fix a puncture. They've taken the assumption is was offered b...

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

Honestly, I'm beginning to feel like I've no idea how to behave. It does seem to be it's getting harder to know what to do. On the CL I saw 2 women at the side of the track with an upside down bike. I stopped and asked if they were ok? Not because they were women but because they were mountain bike...

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

Honestly, I'm beginning to feel like I've no idea how to behave. I read yesterday that I shouldn't hold a door open for a woman as it says that 'I'm in control' and the woman in question can only enter or leave the room at my wish. I'll hold a door open for anyone, male or female because it's simpl...

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

OTOH most of the overtly "laddish" behaviour that has put many of us off bothying has been going on for decades. Diluting that with other voices could be a good thing for everyone. 100%. I seriously doubt the people who buy and read Phoebe's books are the ones who are causing the kinds of...

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

As others have said, a good article and a good time to have these discussions (is there a bad time to look out for the welfare of others??) It may be that there's never been a sexual assault or case of sexual harassment in a bothy, or that there have been but they're really, really rare. But that mi...

It's a lovely book, am part way through. Here's George, having "re-found the vigour of his youth through cycling". Some boner merch potential here, I'd have thought.
