Re: Gravel porn
Yeah, lots of adverts full of 'stoke'. But just like mtb advertising there's a gap between marketing expectation and reality. I went for a lovely 'gravel' ride yesterday on my drop bar bike, but I didn't need any aero design for the many sections of clattery rock hard tracks or bridleways, the frequ...

Re: Down tube tool kit
Ideas above will work well, I have a strap deck and they make sense for under the down tube. But if you have a bottle cage already then a tool bottle and and voile strap or similar will work well too. If you want a bit more flexibility for attaching to different places, then a little strap on dry ba...

There's a decent looking 2021 medium on ebay for £900. It's the SS version, but you can get the dropouts for geared from Kona UK, just means you need to buy gears though still... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125121540311?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338268676&a...

Re: Kona Unit X any good?
Love mine. I had a 2018 frame that was a little small and got hold of a 2021 frameset, and the geometry (and sizing) is spot on for my needs, especially the head and seat tube angles, and the shorter chainstay length compared to the older model. It rides really nicely, it can be playful and pretty n...

I'd be fancying one of these...custom and lots of customisations available, and beautiful. Fits 29x2.3 too apparently (check the wishbone stays, very lovely)

Re: The Old Chalk Way
It looks interesting to me, and I like the idea of making it more rideable on the fragmented bits. All too aware of pointless horse-hoof concrete bits of bridleway, just because it's on an official route or is off road. Would rather use a tarmac lane most of the time. I love the idea of going from t...

You know the bike inflation bubble is slowing down when PX play with prices again. They didn't shift much for a while and now these are 50% off!?

Re: Oval chainrings
Used the superstar one (38t) on my Camino for about 1100miles so far, and I like it. I think it's a very subtle difference but I think the power delivery is a bit smoother. When my MTB rings die I will try oval on those too. No complaints on the superstar ring and my wallet always baulks at absolute...

Alpkit rear fuel pod arrived after buying it in the sale. Probably don't need it, but nice that it's slimmer than the 'front' fuel pods I normally put at the back.

Re: Inside car protection / bike sock
I use a boot protector and some old sheets, worked well for many years but don't travel with a bike much now. Sheets don't take up much room once folded, soak up most damp/mud and can be used to wrap up wheels/helmet/anything muddy and cover up the bike and pad out edges like pedals. Boot liner help...

Re: Train travel pricing mystery
It is very messed up: I believe there's an unholy mix of some operators using peak time frames to increase prices to (historically) try and manage demand, and this messes up longer journey pricing hence split ticketing, then other operators are doing it a bit like airlines with some seats at cheaper...

Re: Shimano brakes
The other not cheap option, if you want a mix of Hope reliability/serviceability, is to use Hope RX4 post mount shimano caliper (mineral oil) on a shimano mtb lever, which apparently works well. Costs £85 but not likely to have a micro-leak and you can get spares so the caliper should last donkey's....

Re: Guilt issues over not riding.
Thanks for starting this thread. Guilt - yes, I suppose. It's more about annoyance with myself for missing opportunities, much as others have said. I should be easier on myself because I have a 4 year old and 22 month old and a full time job (and 2 fairly naughty cats!) so chances to ride/exercise f...

Have 1 x Trail Boss in 2.4 but has the WTB issue of tread coming up a bit narrow but sidewall a touch wider. 1 x Chunky Monkey 2.4, which is quite old but in very good shape having seen little use. Not tubeless specific but known to go up tubeless just fine. Welcome to either or both for just the pr...

Re: Cameras
As everyone has said so far, decent phone cameras do many things very well now, and it's probably better to have a single item to encourage TLS! I do agree that unless it has an optical zoom then it has some limitations, and I do miss having a camera to hold and manually operate in a camera like way...

I'd give another nod to Sweden too. Not cycled there sadly, but from the visits i've made it's got the terrain and space, and allemansrätten like Norway and Finland. I've always had the High Coast/Hoga Kusten area on my radar to ride at some point, I know people who visited there and it was beautifu...

Vittoria Mezcals in smaller sizes, if available. Worth looking at newer offerings from Pirelli, Goodyear, and Wolfpack as they are slightly off the radar compared to established bike brand tyres. Like these which seem an acceptable price: https://kidsracing.co.uk/collections/wolfpack-tyres/products/...

Running 29/2.3 at the moment. EDIT: a major difference appears to be headtube length which addresses Stu...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
Yeah, it was a bit like a car advert; lots of lifestyle aspiration and not a huge amount of bike. But they've done a sterling marketing job and the video probably ticks all the customer segmentation boxes so fair enough.
