Re: Today's Run
What's the budget? I replaced my Garmin with a Coros Pace 2, very impressed, as well as for running I wear it all the time as a smart(ish) watch - notifications of texts, calls etc, fitness tracker and I also use it on the bike. Really good battery life as well.

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.
Usual school-night bivi. Decided to ride further as the evenings are so nice, not too far or I'd be off the other side of the Island and into the sea. Kept to the south-ish side but my destination was on the north coast. On the Island unless you go through Newport all trips going south>north or vice...

Surely the cat repeller is to keep cats away? If only they made an ultrasonic slug repeller I'd buy one

Re: Contemplating a change of air mattress...
The one that popped the seal between the baffles was replaced by exped - but the replacement has done the same. I don't blow them up hard so I'm not sure what has happened there. My Neoair Unberlite did this as well, replaced under warranty and the new one did exactly the same second use. It also h...

This ^ I have changed my attitude to cheap imports, I'm just not happy with the moral position. I saw feature about a factory where a worker has to reach in and remove an item in time with the process whilst the machine is still moving, almost weekly someone is killed or loses both arms. The locals ...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
I have 3 single speed bikes. Their drivetrain may need less attention, but they're not maintenance free. They're maintenance free if you don't maintain them*, see my winter comutter for example  The trade off is when I do some maintenance it's usually replacing all of it. Does occasionally oil...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
It seems pointless to me, I always say if you're going to have gears - have lots.
If you want, reliable, maintenance free (but never in the right gear ) go singlespeed. Once you add the complexity of changeable gears then have enough to make it worthwhile.

Are you a day early, surely this a Cheery Friday post?
Wouldn't anyone who wanted the contents of the dry bag just cut it open If they're a real bikepacker they'll have an axe attached to the gravel bike they can use to get into it

Yeah interesting point on open data, Dave (likewise a huge fan). I can see that getting revenue from arranging and conveying that knowledge (intellectual capital, if you like) makes sense from a commercial perspective though. The other version describe themselves as The Nearly Wild Camping Club is ...

Can you mix and match Shimano and Hope? Hope use DOT fluid and Shimano use mineral oil so the seals of one may not be compatible with the fluid you choose?

Re: Today's Run
Usual post work Tuesday for me, sunshine all day and clouded over as soon as I left the office, but it did knock the edge off the heat. Went at it harder than normal last week which felt good (afterwards) as I'd realised I was taking it easy every week. No plan this week and wasn't really feeling it...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.
My first in the streak was March 2020. I wasn't doing BAM but had a new (to me) bike and it's now a tradition that the very first ride for a new bike is a bivi. I allow myself a 100m spin in the road outside my house to make sure it pedals but that's it. I realised that if I didn't get out that mont...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.
Another local school-night bivi. In fact it was at the exact same location as last months, although this was deliberate as I had a new bit of kit to try and wanted all the other variables to be the same, so I'm claiming it was for scientific accuracy and not just because I couldn't be bothered to lo...

Re: WANTED - UNDERQUILT FOR HAMMOCK
Cheers guys. I'd been looking on eBay and FB marketplace and noticed they don't seem to come up for sale very often/at all.
Perhaps I'll have a look at synthetic. I've got an old synthetic sleeping bag that might be a good basis for a myog one as a trial.

WANTED - UNDERQUILT FOR HAMMOCK
I slept in my hammock at the weekend and unlike the previous occasion I didn't end up with motion sickness so maybe I've got used to it. Using a mat as the lower insulation is a faff and I feel like I'm missing out on some of the comfort a hammock should provide so looking for an underquilt. I'll be...

Re: What down tube bag…
If it's for tools I think a tool bottle on the underside of the downtube is better, if you can mount a cage there. I'd also use a strap just to make sure the bottle stays in place. I've got a downtube bag but I only use it in the summer or if it's dry on the trails. If it's muddy and you need to get...

Re: Decent lock for bikepacking
I use a little 6mm cable lock, I think I was given it by a friend, they use them at Centreparks maybe? I look at it this way, a proper bike thief can defeat any lock, but, they generally operate where there is more choice (railway stations, bike parking areas in big towns) and aren't waiting for som...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.
Back in December (at the winter bivi) we discussed a solstice bivi, but work commitments meant this was out of the question for me  I did plan to get out locally for the solstice, the actual solstice was Wednesday at 15:58 so I had planned to bivi on the Wednesday night as that's the closest to...
