Re: HT550 Grand Depart - May 2022

Great effort, given some of the weather/conditions. So this gate in Glen Ling that she struggled with.......... Prior to the first time I went through there (2015), I'd read accounts of nightmare clambers and removing luggage bits from bikes. In the event, I found no problem gates there at all. Goin...

I roll mine up and tuck it under the straps on the Wildcat bar harness. Slight loosening and retightening of 2 buckles and it's ready.

Re: The 'why?'

Point of order - there'll be no more YD300, but should hopefully be a NYM300. Stuart Rider is moving to Thirsk to start/manage a new bike shop hence it's unlikely that there'll be an "organised" group start for the YD300. He's looking at creating a NYM300, whether that's next year or the ...

Re: The 'why?'

I've not done many 'races/group starts', but line up with part of me hoping to not be too far behind and/or to post an impressive time, then by lunch time I'm too knackered to push on, so take it at my own pace - take the photos, chat to fellow riders (those that will), look at the view etc. I have ...

Re: Dunoon Dirt Dash

What was the terrain by the Lochan between Goil and Strachur like? Easy push or ridable? 95% rideable. Just a bit of pushing at first along the loch side. It looks to me like they've had a digger up there and dragged up a 'kest' - maybe even added some surfacing. It's only thinking back on it now t...

Dunoon Dirt Dash

Definitely more trip than adventure, but a few of us rode the DDD over two days, based from Dunoon. Not knowing the area, I found it, unsurprisingly very Arran like, but without the big hills. Day one saw us head north through Carrick Castle to lunch at Lochgoilhead, then Cowal Way to Strachur and b...

Re: What are you reading now?

It's taken me decades to realise that Alfred the Great etc had bog all to do with Cumbria. You will be all misty eyed about Yr Hen Ogledd His grandson Aethelstan essentially created England and Britain at Eamont Bridge in 927, and won it outright at Brunanburh Not misty eyed, I've long thought the ...

Re: #jennride part 2 @southlakesbikefest

Great effort John. I'd originally planned for an early ferry and go for a oner, but the old training mantra "listen to your body" meant a 10 am set off with bivi gear. Warm sun, no wind and the bonus of someone having ridden through before me flattening bracken and blunting brambles made f...

Re: Bothy (brick building) query/interest!

As above, permitted development etc can be a minefield and building materials just now are really expensive (isn't everything). A brick/block building could become very damp if not done correctly. Negative doom mongering aside, a mate of mine used a shipping container which he clad externally to bui...

SOLD Hunt Four Seasons gravel wheels 700c

Couple of hundred miles use (prefer 650b), but have some garage/storage scars - a few scratches up to 1" and one very small dent (sharp tool dropped?). Struggling to post pics, but available to view here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/181821066@N08/ Asking £195 with rotors. Cumbria based and wi...

I've been up and down Helvellyn numerous times on foot and bike, on different routes, but never yet from the Thirlmere side.
Sticks Pass is the least painful. Descend by Birk Side at the other end of Thirlmere.

Re: Free train travel in Spain on journeys up to 300k until the end of the year

Can't comment on trains, but I filled up with diesel in the Basque country the other day and the €90 was reduced to €78 due to a central government discount of some sort - my Basque isn't good enough* to fully understand what she said.

* who am I kidding, it's non-existent.

Hopefully.... Jennride No.2, a few days around Lomond/Trossachs/Argyll in Sept and my first BB200 in Nov. Have 60+ Wainwrights to wander over - though can't see them being done now within my self-imposed year. Ho hum. Also need to get son off to and settled at Uni somewhere.
