Re: Garden camping

From the first post on the "Bivy a Month 2016" thread: Here we are again, another new year and another bivvy a month. The rules are simple - you must spend one night out per calendar month, it can be in a bivvy bag, under a tarp, in a tent or bothy but not a B&B or hotel. You can go as...

Re: Drivetrain Replacement

I must admit I'd not looked at the Sunrace cassettes partly because they weren't around when I went 1x so I've stuck with what I know. I might well consider the 11-42 cassette for an upcoming build. I only tend to change the chainring when I get chain suck. With the number I've got lying around at t...

Re: Drivetrain Replacement

If you run with an extender cog (like I do) then you are limited in which cassettes you can use as you need to be able to "lose" one of the existing cogs so you can replace it with the extender. The XT cassette that I thus use is £35 as opposed to £22 for the Deore. I don't object to that ...

Re: Drivetrain Replacement

Opinion seems divided on this: some do the swap/replace chain methodology; some do the let everything wear out together. Doesn't seem like there's much in it really. I'm on a 1x10 setup and do the replace chain then cassette then chainring method but the extender cog is now on its third cassette as ...

Cheers Stu, checked the end caps and they had worked loose.

For £2.99 a pop it's worth having a set of the bearings lying around.

Alpkit Rumpus free-hub

I've got a bit of lateral play (about 2 - 3mm) in my free-hub. Is this due to the bearings going? If so what bearings (and tools) do I need to service them? If not, what's the likely cause? I know from the "Tell me about B+" thread that a couple of folk have had to replace the bearings.

Sometime round then. You don't want it too early, it'd spoil the surprise

They are small bags ( similar to a climber's chalk bag) that attach to the side of your stem and behind the handlebar. https://www.alpkit.com/products/stem-cell

Re: Which Hope Hub?

The "problem" with the aluminium free-hub is that some cassettes bite into the soft metal which can make getting them off a bit tricky. XT cassettes are fine BTW. Depending on how your single cog is done it could dig in to the free-hub in a similar manner. Weight at the hub isn't that much...

Re: Wheel wobble

Is it the wheel or the tyre? Hold a pencil at right angles to the fork and just away from the rim and spin the wheel to see if it's the rim. Do the same for the tyre.

Re: Bear Bones Bikepacking Events Calendar.

Am I right in thinking that to add an event you create one in your own calendar then invite the BB calendar? I'm unable to create an event directly in the calendar on the web page - there's no event entry screen I can get to that applies to the BB calendar as it is listed in "other calendars&qu...

That's a lovely classic looking steel framed bike, my finger would be twitching over the buy button! Not keen on the mudguards or the chainring guard but those are easy fixes.

Looks nice :-bd Tyre pressures, I've seen 1psi per stone of laden weight (you + kit) then -1 for front and +2 for rear as a starting point. Worth getting a decent low pressure gauge as well - 1psi makes a big difference at these sorts of pressures.

If by "tracking" you mean recording where you've been then you need a dedicated app for that. The basic GPS functionality on a phone is aimed at telling you where you are and optionally telling you where the nearest Spar is. Generally with phones the fewer things you have running the bette...
