Re: West Highland Ride, October 2011

Richard - very nice write up and your blog looks like it could consume several hours too - nice photos of the Cairngorms there for anyone planning on the Round later this year. Cheers.

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2011

Thanks for the comments. The mount is just a normal GoPro bar mount with some cut up inner tube to pad out the bar a bit. Nipped up finger tight. Seems to not move too much but camera does pick up all the noises transmitted through the frame (Hope Pro II freehub, clipping in and out etc.). Playing a...

Re: Which Stove?

Hi there Chew, The Evernew stove fits very neatly in the Solo Set ( http://backpackinglight.co.uk/product499.asp?PageID=100 ) they do, with the DX stand in there too. Without the DX stand you can get the trivet and stove in there with other bits and bobs (brew kit, lighter etc.) easily. Internal dim...

Re: Llanidloes Winter Bivi role call

Hi All,
I will have to duck out of this weekend - not back from work trip till later Friday night at best (and probably weather dependant too!). It's nothing to do with looking at the weather forecast, honest!
Have a good one, Mark

Re: Welsh Ride Thing 2011

I know what you mean Stu - the ride down the ridge was into the wind/rain and not pleasant but not THAT bad. I was a bit knackered after the push up and we should have dropped north off the summit ridge.... we (Matt and me and Ollie who we met in the woods on the way up) didn't want to miss the ridg...

Re: Weekend ... anyone out?

Stu - yep the Cowlyd track has something of a reputation in these parts.... there seem to be several tracks like that in North Wales MTB guide books that I swear have not actually been ridden! The connection for a return trip over Crafnant involves a 'bit' of a drop down to Trefriw too.... did you g...

Re: Weekend ... anyone out?

Stu.... b*gger - missed your post before the weekend. Would have loved to hook up - where did you get to? I've been eyeing the southern end of Cowlyd as nice spot for a bivvy by bike from the Capel area. Just got back from my first benightment on a mountain bike in the northern Carneddau. Realised o...

Re: Garmin eTrex Legend - £55 posted

Hi Stuart - I'll pass as i like the maps on the memory card (the x in HCX) - still a great unit and they seem very robust as long as the batteries don't leak inside... my fault for leaving crap batteries in the unit. I might wait and get new eTrex 20 or 30. Cheers, Mark

HI Stuart,
Is this the Legend HCx (is there any other version?)?P
Might be interested as I had some batteries leak into my Vista HCx.
Blue won't match my eyes but never mind!

Re: Making meths stoves more controlable.

I agree with Matt - I just want to get the water up to the boil and into the cosy as fast as possible. The only mod I think might be worth the weight would be a purpose designed 'snuffer' - that way you can shut off the stove, allow to cool and re-bottle the last bit of unburnt meths. I think the ba...

Cheers for that TT... working in Norway at the mo' so I'll have a look around for the 294s.... seem to be on sale at some places here at present for a reasonable price... depends on if we get the same snow cover as last year! Ta, Mark

Re: Winters coming - will you change much?

Big sleeping bag obviously; long mat; change the mesh tent inner for the draft proof one; go from meths to gas/petrol (depending on temperature); add down booties maybe; more hot food/brekky and vintage port; a few podcasts on the Shuffle; make sure the lights are properly charged for a change! BBB200 GPX File

I missed the chance to have a crack this year..... any chance I can get a full GPX file to have a look at the route from someone?
Stu - are you planning on a different route next year or maybe the same course?

Re: GPS

Hi Pete, I use a eTrex HCx (which takes a small memory card for the maps). I use this combined with a paper map (you'd generally carry one with a compass as electronics can fail!) - Once I have a tracklog loaded to it I can 'just follow the blue line' to quote Jack from the Orme to Worms trip. I set...

Re: Wales Tour: Great Orme to Worm's Head

Cheers Ian. It's good to know how far you got on day two. I was into Mach at 1710 and really feeling the effects of the heat. I followed you up the last ridge from Tywyn past the Cemetry but that was the last I saw apart form some comforting tyre tracks (in places very reassuring!) for the next 2 an...
