Re: (Reg's) 'Quarries, Shafts & Killer Cows' Thread

Also, landfilling and landscaping old quarries often removes an important local recreational resource. There's been several half decent climbing venues destroyed in Leicestershire like this, at the same time we are all being told to get more fresh air and exercise. There aren't many climbable quarri...

That was a good read. Kudos to you for those miles, no way I could cover that amount of ground. Just goes to show, with a bit of research tacking bridleways and quiet lanes together it's possible to construct a really good route, even in our part of the world :-bd

Maybe organise a ride and camp with a mate? I always have more enthusiasm when I'm out with a friend rather than on my own.

Re: F U R T H E R East (ish)

Hi Boab, the ninth photo down, was that the Lavendon mill crossing? If so I used it bank holiday Friday and Saturday as well. Small world and all that. If you go by Harrold Coop again and they're out of stuff, try the cafe at the country park. It's only two or three minutes away. Sounds like a good ...

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year (I'verounded it down)!

I personally would avoid the FB sale, unless the person is a well known that your familiar with or others can vouch for them. I would buy direct from Tarptent for the same over all cost, so that I've got peace of mind and the Tarptent guarantee it comes with. There is a trend at the moment for some...

Sounds good, I do like a bit of diy tech. Much more interesting than reading about the latest GSXR Firew@nk mega rocket thing. What supercharger are you using?

A project time bomb build up thread would go down well

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year!

The Lunar Solo I got off Stu didn't seem big enough for me. Forgot to say, do you use the mid panel tie-outs? When the wind blew, I had the fabric in my face before I started using them. I cut two thin garden canes so they just fitted my frame bag, then used a junior hacksaw to put a "v" ...

Yes, like Smash. Tastes better than the stuff they used to serve at school dinners though. The herb and butter variety isn't bad at all.

Re: Antidote to the 'modern world'.

Looks good. There's very little that can't be produced with a few tools, skill and a lot of time. I read a book once about ancient technology that was fascinating. For instance, the first coin operated vending machine dates from way-before BC. It was outside a temple and dispensed cups of 'holy' wat...

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year!

Qu for the tarp users, (sorry Shaf, hope you don't mind?)

Are tarps open enough to never get condensation, or is it dependant on how you pitch them? What about the Trailstar, if you pitch it down low because of bad weather, is condensation a problem?

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year!

The Lunar Solo isn't bad. Though it is way more finicky to pitch than my Elixir, practice makes perfect here. I'm 6ft and it's just ok for me as long as there is no condensation. Trouble is, the only time I don't get condensation is when I leave the door open. So on a rainy night I'm getting some we...

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

In 2020 with all the crags out of bounds, my mate and I decided to bikepack the north east half of the Three Shires Way from Rushden. On Friday I thought I'd use the bank holiday to do the south west half and get my June BAM. I went on my own this time, but it wasn't a bad little trip. https://live....

I've got an old 3 season synthetic as well. Unfortunately synthetic bags just don't pack down very well, I have to put mine in a rucksack when I've taken it out.

Thanks Verena. Most of my bivvys will be in spots like this, Northamptonshire doesn't do wild and desolate! I do like reading this thread and quite often it's the details of what people are up to that keeps it interesting. :-bd

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

I fancy a crack at the BaM game if I may. April's was the WRT, but due to me wimping out on the Sunday here is May's. I spotted a quiet corner of a field just off of one of my favourite local byways some time ago and thought it had potential, so I paid it a visit Saturday evening. https://live.stati...

Re: Where the bridleway ends...

Round my way we have footpaths that tractors can use and bridleways that you struggle to get a bike down, let alone a horse and rider. So I pretty much ride them all and have never had any hassle, mind you, I always slow right down when passing. If it's narrow I make a point of getting off early and...
