The Gorse Bush cafe in Kinlochewe had to close for essential gas repairs today (there is an alternative round the corner).
That may have done for Chris Johnstone? He seems to be heading out of Kinlochewe on the road East.

Re: HT550 2021

Looks like he's heading in the right direction now. Maybe just a navigation error? Maybe OBH hasn't opened yet so he went down to look for food in Rosehall instead?

Re: HT550 2021

@touch - Did you go from Dundonnel (mile 350) to the finish, without any sleep that year (2015)? It was after the river crossing in Fisherfield, just before the steep climb up to the plateau. I was also seeing the imaginary people and lights by the time I got to Devil's staircase! FWIW it's a...

There's still over a mile to go to the summit of Devil's staircase which will be slow going. I think it's nearer 4 hours to the finish from here.

Looks like Andrew Hutcheson is making his move to take 2nd place. I think he's been riding with James for a while now but the past couple of pings look like he's pushed on and drawn out a bit of a lead.

Looks like it's back on track now. It had a bit of a breakdown earlier if you check his history: reported him up in the hills above the road to Oykel Bridge then next one he was back in the sea near Clachtoll.

Re: HT550 2021

Might explain why he's actually pulling away then (assuming it's not just the delay between SPOT updates making it look like that, which it easily could be). That 1 mile difference on the hike-a-bike section could be around 30-45 minutes of time difference. That'll translate to 5-7 miles when they ...

Re: Scottish gas canister logistics

Maybe Ft William would be an option if you can't get any in Glasgow.
Looks like the bus stops for 15 minutes in Fort William? That would give you time to run across to the NevisSport and get gas. Depends on the roads and what time the bus actually arrives into Ft William though.

The Kylesku hotel has also been bought over recently. Not sure if that'll change anything - it looks like they're trying a seamless changeover, there's no mention of new owners on any social media or their website so maybe intending to continue things without much change. https://www.northern-times....

Re: Automatic Crash Reporting

How do all these devices actually work. Do they detect impact or a length of time with no movement? Either way, I'd be setting them off willy nilly. I think it's a mixture of both for Garmin Edge devices: detecting an impact or sudden deceleration followed by no movement for a while. It does trigge...

Re: Any micro electronics experts here?

I would guess that the pad on the right in the photo is the ground because it seems to be connected to the large ground plain of the pcb and that would make the one on the opposite side the +5volts connection. That's just a guess really though. I can't tell from the photo because it depends which wa...

Re: Any micro electronics experts here?

You probably don't need to solder up all 5 pins. There's a + and - power (they'll be the 2 outermost connections) and the other 3 are data lines. If the data lines are not connected it might not do any fast charging but if the power is connected it'll still fall back to standard usb charging. You co...

The end of the bar tape is prime location for clamping things to the handlebars and pinching cables. Have you (or whoever had the bike before you) had aero bars, handlebar harness, light clamps or garmin mount fitted there?

Re: GPS tracking accuracy blog

I think the accuracy of plotting the route is likely to have more impact than the actual accuracy of the map used. From the image of the planned route vs recorded log it looks like the planned route follows the centre line of the road. If he was riding along the left of the road in reality, that cou...
