Re: Rough stuff in the Alps on Kickstarter.

Proper mountainbiking :-bd

Funny how things have evolved and how 'rough stuff' turned to 'regular fun bivybiking trip'.

Cheers for pointing it out Stu :-bd

Big SON fan here. 5 years, never ever did I give it any attention and 0 issues.

It's on my snow bike and hardly sees any dirt, just water in different phases and some salt.

Re: CRC have stolen Stu's motto

Not with any intent to devalue the BB use of this, just an interest in IP and slogan use, advertising and stuff like that. It's a phrase that's been around a while in motorbike circles but not sure where it started. Fair to say it's a BB motto though, has been as long as i remember bikepacking in t...

Re: OMW boots, easy on/offable?

Wrote this a bit ago: http://fatbiking.eu/?p=7328 Yes, very easy in & out. I've a rather wide foot at the front and can get in and out without even opening the front velcro and opening the zip completely. superb boots, top performance. Downside; not durable. I only use it in snow and when it's c...

Re: tubeless advice please

Contrary to some I've had bad experience with Conti. I've stopped using them. I only used their ProTection version but they wouldn't last long. The carcass would quickly fail to hold air. No sich problems with comparable tyres from Maxxis or Schwable except for Maxxis skinwall. The problem with Cont...

Re: Hut to hut in the swiss alps

Ewan, I'm afraid we have to PM if you want gpx files. Try this first: Augstbordhorn - Visp https://map.wanderland.ch/?lang=de&bgLayer=pk&resolution=10&season=summer&E=2630703&N=1123779&layers=Wanderland&trackId=4159949 If the whole process works with downloading etc. I'll...

Re: Hut to hut in the swiss alps

Exactly :-bd There's a small cable car that goes up from just behind the train station (train line Visp - Zermatt) at St. Niklaus (mind, locals call it Sanniglaas). The ride down from Jungen is steep and the terrain seems very exposed, but (and it's a big but) the path is easy to ride and rather wid...

Re: Hut to hut in the swiss alps

July is a bit early. If I were you I'd prepare some alternative routes - given you're thinking of going past Col de Prafleuri and Col de Riedmatten. In the Bürchen area you can get the cable car from Raron (SBB train station) or more precise from Turtig to Unterbäch and Eischoll. Also in the vicinit...

Re: Training for the CTR

Gnar is not a word?? Both shocked and disappointed. I have met a few Euro xc and enduro racers that will sleep high. I'm not good on the science as I've never spent long enough high enough to take a thorough interest. That said I do tend to enter a race for the weekend I return from Alps trips, thi...

Re: Training for the CTR

There go my col finish sprints then. '50-60% of his performance level' - any links for more? I understood that a regular output/HR relationship when at altitude meant you were acclimatised but not sure where the 'effort high up' thing came from. I only found some outtakes of F. Bergholds book - mos...

Re: Training for the CTR

I see the mental part more in the location and lack/difficulty of access to medical support than altitude. Oh yes, that as well, but these days I don't think I'd take any more risks in Snowdonia than I would in Nepal. The thinking speed thing was apparent when coming back to 2000m or so and riding ...

Re: Training for the CTR

I really feel destroyed 3900m plus, the shitty feeling comes at about 3600m. gosh, did that happen a few times? I know a woman who simply can't go beyond about 5600 - 5800. She tried a bunch of times on different occasions and it just wouldn't work. But often it's related to stress from travel or e...

Re: Training for the CTR

Altitude affects you mentally also, I've found it meant backing off technical sections that I knew I could ride at sea level, I just wasn't picking lines or reacting as fast as I would normally, above 3500m and it was quite an effect (though that'll be more about my acclimatisation rate than the ac...

I recall Jenny riding the ATR. Carrying the bike on the back due to the route going through the Grand Canyon, where bikes, even pushing them, are a no go. Alan G could give some advice. He's ridden the CTR, I think and will know the route characteristics first hand. The CTR has loads of double track...

This is the basic maths behind quilts: 17.5-3.5×loftheight in cm For sleepingbags loftheight in cm is divided by two.
