Re: Britain's toughest race

Johnclimber's half right about enduro, those videos of Dan Atherton at full speed for 12, 13 mins show what fitness you need to keep going that fast, I know as soon as I red-line whatever technical ability I have goes to pot. Surely the hardest race is the one you haven't prepared for? I think it'd ...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Going to be looking for a place to stash bike bags/boxes in Turin if anyone has any suggestions/recommendations. There's a hotel recommendation on the TNR site and I've been told they can do that for you, otherwise there's an offer of help that may cover it - assume as long as numbers are reasonabl...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Not yet, I've pretty much finished tidying up the 2015 GPS tracks, revised some of the route and written the cue notes but it won't all be sent out until ~June, in case there's a track or option to add, changes needed, etc. It'll be GPX format for the route with cues in an editable format for howeve...

Re: wtb trailblazer pressure

The trailboss is on i45 and unless I get it quite high I find the front dives as the weight moves forward under braking and compresses the side walls. Normal I think, within reason, maybe get used to moving your weight back a bit more under braking? Unless it's folding the sidewalls fully, doubt it...

Re: wtb trailblazer pressure

Trailboss 3.0 at 20 psi Seems high. I ended up around 12-13psi for Trailblazers on I45mm rims before I felt they offered any real grip or rolling advantage over 2.4 Ardents on 35mm rims, so the same or lower on 3.0 tyres since the Trailboss casing feels comparable (not fitted them yet though, too w...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Have people checked which trains their journeys will be using as most TGV trains in France don't allow bikes. What's your experience over from there Gairy, is it all a bit variable? So far just been looking at the Paris-Turin or Nice legs, not detail of Nice-Turin. TGV appears to take packed bikes ...

Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Hi Gavihel, the best option looks like trains that take around 5hrs with 1 change, listed on the SNCF site. If you're flying in, Nice Ville train station has a regular shuttle bus service linking to the airport or take a ~5km walk along the seafront and up to the station. https://www.google.co.uk/ma...

Sudocrem / Savlon for general anti-bacterial use inc hands, cuts or sore spots, any water source for a wash / rinse clothes, spare clean socks for the bivi, don't use padded shorts. Took a while to learn some of those lessons through uncomfortable experience. Good advice passed on from some more exp...

Re: Mini Vs

If your bike had cantis before you'll need mini-vs to get the right cable pull, certainly with road STIs you will anyway. Also watch out for the arm lengths, not all mini-vs are the same, can be 85-95mm range and it makes a difference. I find the 95mm arm mini-vs a PITA to get well set up, generally...

Re: Restoring old things - brand new look or aged patina?

I think restored-as-new cars or bikes show a care and respect for old things that I really appreciate, I love vintage rallies for that. Wear and tear is just worn-in like anything that's good quality and stands up to long-term use will have. Bag scuff marks, crank scuffs, worn saddles, all good to s...

Re: Handlebars?

The GC1 is a grip developed for the ergonomic demands of users of bicycles with backwards-swept handlebars, such as those found on city bikes. Using tradition grips on these bikes causes a kink in the wrist. The GC1 corrects this wrist position through its anatomic and ergonomically correct form. A...

Reading with interest as my 8+ year old camera is on its last legs now. Photography is 90% composition. A 'better' camera won't really make any difference. Agreed, but also interested in anyone's experience with cameras that may have lenses or settings that suit outdoor photography rather than lots ...

Good point - the info I had was from national express who will take a dismantled/wrapped non-folding bike, but Eurolines are the main part of the service, looks to be different. Will check.

Re: Bang for buck... What's the best bikepacking route?

Call me unimagintive but it's the Ridgeway for me as it starts near to my home and makes a good base for anything from out-back training rides or a lazy summer overnighter. Enough variation to be a nice ride, enough continuity to feel like a 'route' and lots of opportunity to vary it with off-route ...

Re: Coffee makers

Turkish/Cowboy coffee? Good brew, weight-free. Just get the right grounds and it works well. I have the Ortleib filter holder, it's ok but tends to make either a weaker or colder coffee (colder if you filter 2x to make it a bit stronger).

Re: Bearstock the party - what do you want?

I'll be riding either along the Ridgeway or a nearby road toward Stroud, then into Wales if there's a convoy in that direction. Haven't actually checked the postcode yet but it'll get me fed on the way and meeting up with up with 2 others.
