Re: Bikepacking Collective - Worth it?
I joined this year to see what the journal was like, support the site a bit, and see if I win anything...you also get first dibs on new releases in their shop, which has been useful for some stickers but that's about all for me! Not sure if the discounts will come in useful for me yet. Only just had...

Re: Packable v Heavyweight Waterproofs
Yeah, I can certainly understand it and not being DWR is a major plus. Just find it difficult to spend that much on clothing and its more of a mental block having never really spent that much before. But then again, last time I did spend that on outdoor clothes was my trusty Buffalo special 6 shirt,...

Re: Packable v Heavyweight Waterproofs
I totally get that they are probably good value when used a lot for a long time, but they are eye-wateringly expensive though aren't they? There's no way I could stretch to that money, or want to either...so assuming if I wanted one for under £100 for instance it would be sacrificing one of packabil...

Think it is an official bank holiday, including schools and nurseries closing and basically the full works, including centre PARC's telling people who've paid for a holiday to bugger off for a day  We're deciding what to do with the kids on Monday, maybe trespassing on a National trust propert...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
Looks interesting from VO: https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2022/09/good-news-for-vo-utility-bars-and-rack.html?mc_cid=80223987d1&mc_eid=ec0251e41c Suspect it will be fairly expensive, limited availability, and heavy. But a neat way to mount lighter things. The U-shape tube on the flat bar versi...

Thanks for the responses so far @thebrowndog - sounds a good way to use that material! Thanks kindly for the offer, i'm not decided what size i'd like yet @cheeky monkey - I have an old karrimor sabre 30 with one in! It's non-folding though, but I might take a look to see if it can be cut down...? I...

Sit Mat
So, anybody use a sit mat? Any recommendations? Want to get one for times on the bike when I stop for lunch, things like that. Also for use hiking/walking generally out and about. Fairly light would be nice, but don't want an air inflated one just cos it seems unnecessary? Needs enough insulation th...

Re: Todays ride
Looks and sounds painful Boab, hope you recover soon. Agree that crashes take a bit more getting over as you get older, last off for me involved some shouting in pain and lying on the spot for a bit. Nice rid out for lunch at a posh pub/cafe in Inkpen yesterday. Really nice mix of paths, tracks, tow...

Re: New multi-tool and/or leatherman type thingy advice...
Sorry, no help with recommendations. I totally get the usefulness of leatherman style tools in general, but specifically for bike use they seem to be of limited use. I've never used pliers or a knife to work on the bike ( maybe snipping cable ties? ), so there's quite a few fairly redundant bits on ...

Re: Kit lust.
Lust for kit has only ever really been bike-focussed for me, and I don't really have much of it now i'm pretty settled on what type of bike I need and want. Clothing and camping stuff is less exciting for me, and I probably have enough to be getting on with for the limited amount I do for now. As ot...

Re: Wildlife
For the second day in a row we had a hummingbird hawk moth in the garden, feeding on some flowers. I've seen a few before and I just love them, they behave just like a hummingbird but with a bit of a straw like mouth instead of a beak (never seen an actual hummingbird). And they're beautiful too! Pi...

Re: Bothy (brick building) query/interest!
Definitely worth checking the rules in your area around permitted development. To be honest, it wouldn't have thought it'd be the cheapest way to get an outbuilding, even if you get plenty of reclaimed materials. Bearing in mind that reclaimed brick and slate still has a cost value if it's useable. ...

My first 'proper' mtb in 2004, yes. I spent a tax rebate on it while at Uni, so spent a fair bit of money on it. It was called faustus. Hence the username  Pretentiousness of that name aside, i'm not against naming. My other half has an old pink on one 456 and a charge grater, and they are ca...

Funny old bugger Orwell. But yes, a top read. Perhaps more appropriate to us lot though would be 'Down and out in Paris and London'. In fact I might go and dig it out of the loft right now. Got a bike though and I'm a 'Boner so I'm happy  . Hmm, a little adjustment to 'Got a bike and a 'Bone...

2021 Kona Unit X frameset, with collection of my older SLX/XT/XTR stuff on it
Sonder Camino Al v3 frameset, again with my own parts, 650b
2012 Inbred 26er town/utility bike
Only the utility bike might get 'upgraded' due to having spare 29er wheels/tyres, others are keepers.
