Re: Gravel but not, kind of.
It's a bike I admire but would never want to own. It fits very much into the ultraromance retro-cool philosophy (and I don't mean that as a pejorative, despite sounding like it!), no doubt it'll do well and it does look pretty nice.

Re: This doesn't look right to me
Yep, should be flush! Loosen it and move it down then re-tighten. Then don't overtighten the top cap. To be honest i've had mixed results with carbon steerer bungs. Some kept coming loose no matter what I did, or how much carbon paste I used. If it does it again then look for ones with a large grip ...

The latest iteration of the Maxxis Forekaster looks a decent XC all-rounder. Sure, not meant for mud but the knobbles are well spaced and it gets good reviews...e.g. https://www.bikeperfect.com/reviews/max ... ire-review

Making my way slowly, deliberately, and enjoyably through Cormac McCarthy's The Passenger, then the companion novel Stella Maris. It's a book that has been long in the making, and it's sometimes like a greatest hits of Cormac tropes - no bad thing! Neil Ansell's Deep Country - had mixed feelings abo...

As trailled on bikepacking.com, I like the look of this as an ATB. Spot on geometry for it. Pricing not bad for a made in UK frame either: https://www.windoverbikes.co.uk/beacon https://static.wixstatic.com/media/4e783b_45fd665e51854e8ea38eb83ca7319ee9~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1446,h_965,al_c,q_85,usm_0.6...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?
Yup, a national park wide right has been replaced with a permissive use at the whim of landowners in selected areas. Oh, and landowners get some money out of the NPA - even if it's a token amount, it's bullsh1t. The fact that the situation has been turned like this, is shameful. Fair enough on the N...

SKS Bluemel 75 U long arrived from bike24. Quite speedy considering. BUT - box was practically open, all the bits loose inside and cardboard packaging open. Look to have all the bits though. But as i've heard others before, the stays are way too short for a 29er, so need to spend extra for some lon...

Re: Anyone gone back to sus forks (from rigid)
I don't doubt all that at all. When i've had simple forks (Solo Air, crown lockout) they've been great. Just can't be arsed to give it a thought at the moment. and my local riding doesn't warrant it much, so guess that makes the difference!

Re: Anyone gone back to sus forks (from rigid)
One reason i've stayed rigid, is that for whatever reason, I find thinking or talking about suspension incredibly dull. I'm certainly not against using them, but thinking about them - nah.

Not ever bought a new complete bike, always frame and build with what I have, and parts get upgraded along the way. Got a decent set of parts which haven't changed much and content with 10 speed with no plans to change. Currently slowly clearing excess parts and frames, BUT: last big purchase: 2021 ...

Ditto. 29er Isotope rims, V6 hubs. Weigh a bit less than advertised, and it has a very buzzy freehub. Superb for the money.
