Re: Pack rafts - Please may I ask?

I’ve been interested in pack rafts since the Lake Bala weekend, my lad and I enjoyed it hugely and I was surprised at the lack of faff, but the cost is off putting I think one of the problems is that by their nature, for most, pack raft trips have to be contrived. Obviously bike trips are the same,...

Re: Dynamo Hubs

I have a Son that I have used for years for touring and commuting. It's now on a Troll having been on a Thorn and a Woodrup but is a non disk version. It has been returned twice for bearing replacements - which has been free and really quick via SJSC. I have been considering a dynamo for bike packin...

Re: Anyone paddled the Wye?

I have paddled from Glasbury to Monmouth - in a kayak and in a canoe. I haven't paddled it in a raft. It's a very nice river touring trip. S. Yat is a bit bumpy and I recon I'd need to make sure my bike was well tied down and balanced before doing the drop! I may be being cautious, but I think for I...

Re: Pack rafts - Please may I ask?

I must admit that I bought my raft with my eye on bike rafting. But, it does involve faff. In the end I tend to ride to a place where there is some good paddling then leave the bike and set off in the raft. For example... Train to Ardrossan, ferry and bike to Jura and on to West Loch Tarbert. Jura i...

Re: Pack rafts - Please may I ask?

I have two Alpacka rafts already so am not sure I will be buying one right now but I have friends who may. I speak as a sea kayaker who has paddled for years all over the west coast of Scotland as well as at home in Wales. My pack raft is now used more than my sea kayaks. They are brilliant for expl...

Re: Kindergarten geometry playground

Thinking of bikes as 2 linked diagrams helps for me - 1 diagram is the side view of the 3 contact points as a triangle, the other is where the wheels are in relation to that triangle. eg ^^^ this times 1 billion ^^^ Fit and riding geometry are 2 things that constantly get mixed up all the time. I u...

Re: Kindergarten geometry playground

Interesting discussion. Some thoughts... I guess part of the story is that there is more than one way to be comfortable on a bike, and geometry is not the only thing that makes you comfy. The touring orthodoxy is that you need a slack seat angle to stick your backside out behind you as a counterweig...

Re: End of the Troll

Also end of the pugsley. Bit of a design classic really..... I am sad the Pug has gone. There's nothing quite like it. And its the "new" one as well. As the fat bike market has returned to just being Surly & Salsa again (or so it seems) I'm surprised that the expedition model wasn't t...

Re: Reccomend a 650b Plus Steel Frame?

Cramped position when sitting and utterly cramped when standing despite a huge seat and head tube. Nervous handling up front. Unnecessarily stiff in the rear, yet still quite some lateral movement of the rear wheel, soft in the front and fork. QR surely didn't help. Yet it's longer reach than my ri...

Re: Reccomend a 650b Plus Steel Frame?

I have a Mk1 longitude and it struggles with 29 x 3" tyres. I have gone down to 2.6 at the back for this reason. So, how do you get a non boost to properly clear a 3" tyre without terrible chainline? 650b wheels would surely suffer from worse chainline as the angle between the rim and the ...

Re: Has anyone ever totally given up...

I have given up on some Schwalbe supreme (?) tyres on 26' Andra rims. They were just too baggy and the bead wouldn't seat on the rim despite trying all kinds of things including Schwalbe tyre lube and overinflating. I hate badly seated wobbly tyres so I couldn't put up with them.

Re: Surly LHT 26, where to buy in europe?

I don't think I'd let the V brake v disc debate be the deciding factor. Some decent cable discs shouldn't cause you anymore trouble than V's and you'll also have better brakes which is quite useful on a heavily laden bike  Yep. Cable BB7’s and as big a rotor as you can fit are just the ticket...

Re: Surly LHT 26, where to buy in europe?

I guess if its discontinued you'd have to look at a Disk Trucker, Troll if you don't mind flat bars or maybe something like a Thorn Sherpa if you def want both drops and rim brakes.

Re: Chain rotation?

I find chain wear very variable and can't predict how a chain is doing - so get caught out from time to time. I don't measure miles on any of my bikes except my Tern cargo bike so am not a good judge but 2500 km doesn't seem too bad if those are off road and mucky rides. Before lockdown for commutin...

Good thread... I am thinking about the same. I'm not unfit but I fuss over my aging knees. Will SSing make them hurt more? I live in a place with lots of nasty short sharp hills.

I find that now I need glasses for distance... but ride in fairly crappy self prescribed specs, night riding has got a bit harder. I must get an eye test and sort out some better glasses. I still enjoy it though. I take a while to get used to my evenings being cut short in autumn until I remember yo...
