Re: Bonkers time triallists

Blaming the victims isnt helpful either I think we’re in danger of arguing when we are all actually agreeing. No one is saying that TTs shouldn’t be held on busy roads if the riders want to do that. I just can’t for the life of me understand why they do it, but that applies to the vast major...

Re: Bonkers time triallists

I wasn’t making any points about they should/shouldn’t be there etc, it was more a visceral reaction to seeing them and thinking ‘f**k, that looks dangerous...’ It was clear that some of the riders were venturing as far out into the lane as they dared to get the best ‘push’ and ‘suck’ so to speak. 1...

Bonkers time triallists

Have just had a trip (in the car) down to Tamworth from New Mills, visiting family. On the way back we were on the A50 for a bit and there was a time trial event on. The A50 (on this stretch at least) is a really busy dual carriageway, loads of artics as well as cars, all doing 60-70, the lanes are ...

Oh and don’t worry if the climbs feel harder than you want. One thing that SS will do for you is make you better at recovering after big efforts 🙂

Re: Thinking SS...

Redefined- if your commute is a road one, I think those ratios will be too low. You’ll be spinning out for much of the ride. I use 42:18 on my road commute on a heavy bike with a pannier and chunky heavy tyres. It’s 13mile each way with around 700ft climbing on the way home. With that gear I find up...

Re: Thinking SS...

A lot of love on here for single speeds! I’ve been riding ss off-road almost exclusively for ages (18 years or so). A bit less so in the last year as my fitness has dived a bit. I commute on a Genesis Day One too, have probably done 10k miles on that. Some learnt lessons/tips: Just convert your exis...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

I’ve used it a couple of times, it can be a bit breezy as one side is almost completely open to the elements. No colder than a tarp and bivvy though!
It does have a very nice bench, proper mod cons. And a stream only a few metres away.

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

I got caught in a biblical deluge just after setting off. After a couple of miles it eased off to bog standard pissing it down.
I live a couple of miles down the valley from Whaley Bridge. Hoping we don’t get a repeat performance.

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

Thanks for the encouragement :-bd Just getting ready for the ride in to work, windy ‘n wet already (the weather, not a description of me). Have only got a water resistant bivvy bag (and quilt), no tarp or tent. This is to make me do the longer ride to the shelter up at Ladybower. (A safe distance ab...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

With holidays coming up, my only chance for an August bivvy is tomorrow night. The forecast here in the Peak is dire, so I’m posting my intentions here to stop me backing out :???:
Planning to head somewhere with a roof, trouble is it’s 4 hours ride from work.

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

A late post for July's BaM. 7 out of 7 Friday evening saw me setting off for an intended 4 hours riding to do a loop that brought me to a bivvy spot not far from home. Saturday morning we were heading off to Wales so I needed to be back earlyish. Good intentions soon faded as I hit the first decent ...

Nice one summittoppler. Having been up and around that area many times (on foot and climbing) not sure I'd fancy taking a bike  . There's rideable and then there's "rideable"...

@Crewlie - I love the Gigha photos, we spent new year on Gigha this year, its a beautiful place (in a cottage, not bivvying  ). The kids even went for a swim to celebrate New Year’s Day.

@Jaminb - a fully qualified BaM I reckon and extra points for involving the little uns.

I definitely get you on this Piemonster. I think if you have a background in running/walking/climbing in the Uk hills you develop a love of good ole OS maps. :-bd
I have a Miry mapboard for Trailquest type stuff, I haven’t used it for ‘normal’ riding. Map in back pocket is the usual for me.

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

June BaM 6 out of 6. I was a bit bored of heading out from work on a Friday and doing the same old trudge out into the Peak, so I packed the bike in the car and drove out to Buxton after work. I had created a 50 mile route using BikeHike (first time doing this) using some new to me trails round the ...

FLV - I’m curious about the fatigue failure. Where did it fail and how did you check it? I’ve got an El Mariachi SS, it’s had a hard life and has plenty of missing paint and superficial (I hope) corrosion. It’s disappointing that Salsa haven’t responded but not sure what you’d expect from them. If I...

Re: "Wild" camping "legalised" in England and Wales - pilot scheme

I’m astonished that they were so clueless about the knock on effects of what they were trying to do. Issues that occurred to all of us 1 minute after reading the website.
Anyway it is heartening that they took the criticism on the chin and shut the scheme down (for the time being at least).

Re: "Wild" camping "legalised" in England and Wales - pilot scheme

It’s just another way of commodifying the outdoors. Imagine if it caught on in a big way.., say if lots of farmers in the Lakes saw it as a way of boosting their income a bit. If you had a couple of scenic hill tarns on your land where you might see a tent or two on a summer weekend, why not put a s...

May - 5 out of 5. The usual routine of a commute in to work on the loaded up singlespeed and an early finish to head off into the Peak for Friday night. Feeling like there was no rush now that the nights are nice and light, I stopped for a cuppa at Buxworth Basin. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535...
