Re: Bivvy a month 2022

On the link to the village's history it mentions that the plague was a common reason for abandonment, they don't know why Mallows Cotton was deserted though. You can't beat a juicy Victoria plum, the tastiest variety I think.

Actually they are dolerite.
 Ah, yes. Totally different rock type. I haven't looked at the Tremadog guide for a while.

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

August done near the site of the abandoned medieval village Mallows Cotton. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1010393?section=official-list-entry Not much to see there apart from the earthworks, but interesting nevertheless. I arrived just before dusk and spent an uneventful...

Re: Atlantis

Much is down to post glacial rebound - basically the UK is rising/ has risen after the weight of the ice from the last ice age has gone. Think of it like an apple bobbing in the sea. The uplift isn't consistent, generally the west coast is rising whilst the east is either static or slightly sinking...

Good for you. I take a carrier bag with me to pick up litter as well. Well, when I'm climbing I do. Seems so much faff on a bike ride, you'd be getting on and off all the time and never getting anywhere.

Nice photos, good to see young 'uns having fun outside :-bd

Re: Bikepacking awards, your best bit of kit, ever!

OS maps subscription Obviously not kit in a physical sense. I received this as a birthday present and think it's great. It's encouraged me to do a lot more exploring since I've had it, I've found bridleways that I didn't know existed only twenty minutes away. I know it gets some stick for not being...

Re: The end of gas stoves: a genuinely new approach to boiling water?

That's a neat use of bronze age technology. Obviously the fan won't last forever, so I hope it's replaceable. It would be cool if after you've finished cooking there was enough airflow so you could disconnect the power and it kept burning for as long as you added fuel. It would also mean that if the...

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

July BaM, I went out Saturday evening to explore a bit more of North Beds. One of the bridleways I couldn't get down due to a small tree having fallen. I'm ordering a Bahco folding saw before going back. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52253464166_fe987fb0d4_z.jpg 20220730_211205 by Robert Smith...

@ TheBrownDog, some serrations is a good idea. I haven't got a Dremel, but I might try putting some in with a slitting disc :-bd

Like the trowel/crudcatcher Stu, how did it perform? I do like dual purpose stuff.

Re: New SMD Lunar solo owner

Hello GW, I bought a Lunar Solo off of this forum, it came with a BB carbon pole. I pitched it in the garden when a named storm was passing to test it and the pole was fine with it. For pegs, I use MSR ones that came with my Elixir. I use the stuff method when packing it away, then give it a bit mor...

That's for testing my next idea, a dynamo powered, electrically boosted auto enema. For when a bikepacker has had one too many dehydrated meals :o

Poop trowel

Made this trowel, could also be used for a heavy duty tent peg. It's 220 x 50mm, material is 2mm stainless steel. It weighs 141g even with all the holes so not the lightest option. :???:

Re: Isle of Wight bike hire

TAV was recommended by someone my wife knows as well, will make some enquiries. With a bit more searching there's also Wight cycle hire, Route Fifty7, Two elements, Isle cycle and South Island hire. Spoilt for choice really. Are the old railway lines part of the Red Squirrel Trail? Found some photos...

Isle of Wight bike hire

I suppose that this question is directed towards Sean really, but I thought I'd post it here in case others wanted to contribute. We're on the Isle of Wight beginning of August, whilst there I'd like to hire some bikes for a day. I have found three bike hire shops, but where would be the best consid...

I also like that the article has come from a mainstream, respected source. Good that the Darwall's legal challenge is 'out there' in the media with a sensible counter argument.

If the charger output is usb, can you try charging another usb device? Would confirm it's knackered then.

I'm not keen on padded shorts anymore either. Comfy to start with, then it all gets a bit too sweaty around the meat n' two veg... Comfiest thing I've found to ride in is Ronhill Tracksters with nothing underneath, perfect for the winter but not so good in warmer weather. Then I had a lightbulb mome...
