Re: New bikepacking bike

Insurance company rang me today, think they want to replace the Epic rather than give me the cash, not what I really want but may not have a choice. I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that you will always have the choice, it's not up to them. Basically keep demanding money rather than replacemen...

Re: New bikepacking bike

So as an actual contribution to the thread instead of just asking questions.... Always used Shimano myself, normally a mixture of XT and SLX. Always really liked HT2 BB, they have lasted ages for me. I really think the XT shifters feel loads better than the SLX, other than that I wouldn't bot...

Re: New bikepacking bike

a.) Deffo recommend NO. I know I'm riding a carbon bike for the BB200, but it's carbon-ness has been nothing but hassle. In a nut-shell carbon is not very abrasion resistant and it really has been a hard bike to look after (one frame rebuild/patch as the major issue I had). For a sunday best bike, ...

Re: Northern England Christmas Bivi

I'm interested in this as well, I'll be travelling from Birmingham.

I don't know the area at all so if I could tag along on a longish route with someone that would be great?

EDIT: Going to do the Wales one instead as it's far easier for me from the midlands.

Re: The BB 200 Thread

I had the dilemma that if I did stop for a bivvy I have no doubt I could finish but this almost certainly will mean longer than 24 hours. I want a proper pushing my boundaries challenge so that will be to complete in under 24hours so no stopping. However if I get to the stage where I realise I'm not...

Re: The BB 200 Thread

Right I'm ditching everything in the saddle bag and using it for spare clothes, which actually looking at the weather probably won't be that much as it looks like it's going to be a pretty mild night. Might swap the frame bag stuff to the saddle bag and use that for extra food. My food will be a big...

Re: The BB 200 Thread

I see the Carnau bit now. Thanks. The roll on the front is the sleeping bag and bivvy bag. The frame bag has pump, tube, tools etc. normally bike ride stuff. Feedbag will have food in. The saddle pack can be greatly reduced I think. That's where I can drop stuff. That currently has cooking gear in b...

Going anticlockwise it was the difficult section as the fast guys would be hitting during the night. The northern track is reasonably defined, the southern section isnt.

Hey that's a great ride slarge well done. Where is the Carnau bit that people have mentioned being a nightmare? I can't seem to find it on the map... is that the point? Had a go at packing today. This is the most gear I'll be carrying. The saddle bag is mostly full of optional gear that I pro...

Re: The BB 200 Thread

Well I have decided that in terms of kit I'll be treating it like a "normal ride" but carrying the extra stuff I need for the rules... oh and a load of extra lighting... and loads of extra food... and probably some extra clothing as it could be quite cold at 3am...

Hmm...

I am doing the BB200 this weekend as I can't make it next weekend so I will post a trail conditions report here on Sun/Mon Well Steve's underway. Weather conditions are much better than yesterday but I imagine he'll encounter quite a few moist bits ... looking forward to seeing how he gets on. Is h...

Re: Imparting some light on the situation!

Well I have a bunch of Magic Shines that I have used for years and they haven't really let me down. Replaced one battery in that time but only cause I was getting life of about an hour on full blast. Started using that just as a commuting battery. They are much maligned though in some circles and th...

Re: The BB 200 Thread

Probably going with a fast rear; Aspens, and a medium front; smorgasbord. I guess depending on how slarge's report goes and the weather between now and then I might go with an Aspen on the front as well.

Re: The BB 200 Thread

I'm having some last minute thoughts about putting my rigid fork on my hard tail. What are people's thoughts on this? Ian rode rigid the first year and road bouncy the second. Rigid may be lighter and faster but a bit of comfort may help with fatigue over the distance But I thought Ian ran carbon b...
