Re: Butchered cassette on SS freehub?

I took apart an old LX cassette where the cogs were all joined to each other by three bolts. I think I went for 24, 21, 18, 16, 14. I couldn't quite squeeze a sixth cog in. I discovered that shifting wouldn't work with a shimano shadow mech as the gradient over the larger cogs was too steep and its ...

Re: Bloody doctors

Tendons can take a while to fix themselves - the achilles in particular. You might try gentle rides with flat pedals with the middle of your foot over the axle to reduce strain on the tendon in order to maintain some activity without over stress. You might also think if anything has changed in your ...

Chances of winter bivvy having snow are slim I reckon: UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 Nov 2011 to Tuesday 13 Dec 2011: The end of November and start of December look set to see some rather unsettled and changeable weather, particularly towards the north and west, with drier and more settled conditions in...

Re: Can't afford a Fargo - how about this instead?

Gotta admit I quite liked the look of Alex's bike on the Radnor Ring, except for the diameter of the wheels. It looked in proportion and everything, but with narrower tyres on I think 26" wheels would give a bit too "trail feedback"

Re: Heat exchangers & meths - any reason not to?

Yep, got one of those MSR heat exchangers somewhere in the cupboard. The Primus ETA pans have a bit of a heat exchanger on the bottom, similar to the optimus one. I have a large one for car camping (1.7 litres) which is good. The size of their "smaller" 1.0 litre pots is still a bit on the...

Re: Spot Trackers

The mark 1 versions have a fairly old gps chipset in them, which makes them a bit unreliable in dense tree cover. The mark 2 is supposedly better but has a reduced battery life. I have the mark 1 and it's had something like 100 hours use, 80 of which were in tracking mode so the batteries do last a ...

Re: GPS

My GPS will record total time (i.e. as soon as the unit is turned on) and moving time, which should be obvious what that does. As far as replacing a bike computer is concerned, if you want to look at it at the end of the week/month/year to see how many miles you've done, then I don't think GPS is de...

Re: Who carries a compass?

Good point Thom. I remember once getting a bit lost on Monk's Trod and in all directions were rounded hills and no visible summits anywhere. I couldn't work out how far off the actual track I was and in which direction. In end I managed to see a building I could identify on the OS map, from which I ...

I have a tiny silva one that lives on my handlebars
Is that the same one that doesn't point north due to metal interference?

;)

Don't usually carry one with me, tbh. Don't often find myself in place with very poor visability where I can't just use a map to figure out where I am
