Re: Let's have a photo comp;.

3/ Ideally it'll be a picture taken during 2023 ... but I'll not be going checking. This was taken last year but after the closing date for last years comp so that must be ok? otherwise there's a period when any photos taken can't ever be in the comp? Re: Winter Hammocking

The first thing I'd look at would be the cinched ends of the UQ: not an easy thing to get right especially if you are on your own. They want to be just snug enough to pull the material up against the hammock but not too snug. If there's a gap then it feels like there's a draught and you get Cold Bu...

Re: Winter Hammocking

Ended up carting it all in to the disabled loo (which had underfloor heating) and sleeping in there Back in the 80s when I was in the Scouts we had a camp in October at a local campsite, for the East Wight area. As the wind increased during the night more and more of the tents either fell over or w...

Re: Winter Hammocking

I did consider making one but the minimum order from Extremtextile is only a few pounds less than the cost of the Thunderfly I'd not save any money.

Plus I've made 3 tarps and 2 tarp-tents before so I like the idea that it just arrives finished

Cheers both, it's watching Shug in lockdown that got me started on this  I've just had a small windfall from British Gas (they'd made my monthly payment too high and I ended up quite a bit in credit - phoned them up to suggest they didn't need me to loan them any money - got a refund) so I did...

Back off topic, if the ducks cant swim fast enough to go against the current cant they just get out and walk on the tow-path? Having ridden several hundred miles of tow path this summer I did spot that they are being topped up by flow in at places and at others there are overflows. Winter Hammocking

So as not to go off-topic in the Bivi a Month thread I'll start one here to share advice for winter BAM hammocking. My original curiosity with the use of a hammock was the possibility to use sites too sloped for laying on the ground, which applies to a lot of the more out of the way places on the Is...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

We have an actual wind turbine blade manufacturer on The Island so I might be able to get some cheap factory seconds, they're quite, umm, big  Stu, how many sections will a 150m tall carbon pole be? PS, this isn't actually a BAM, that was Thursday during the weather warning for rain. I'm trying...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Decided not to leave it until the last minute this month. The forecast was a yellow warning for rain but that wasn't until 06:00 Thursday so if I went Wednesday night I would be able to get out and set-up in the dry. There was only light winds forecast so that was the important part. Left home earli...

Re: Dealing with the damp

I think the trick with gaiters is to have short-ish ones and put your waterproof trousers over the top. The water running down the trousers runs over the gaiters and over the boots. If you put them on the outside of your trousers, like the ramblers, then the water running down your leg will tend to ...

There's something good about running in terrible conditions with an overly cheerful persona

I've rested my achilles for a few weeks now and my knee seems to be better after last week's road accident so I'm going to try an easy run next week.

Ace that. Nice report and pix. One more thrilling installment to go? Spoiler alert, we could have stayed out for another night but we did make it back to Mike's the next day. Aptly, I think that's a monkey puzzle tree. We have one in the park on our estate that's a left over from the Victorian era ...

Re: Gravel forks , anything mounts or not

I'd assume the forks are identical and the question is whether having holes in them for the mounts has weakened them?

Are there any weights for the forks to see if extra material has been added to the ones with the mounts?

Hello and welcome to the lunacy

You can start any month you want so if you start now you'll have done a year by next September's bivi :-bd

By then you'll have 12 months in a row and will want to keep going so as not to break the steak  Good luck.
