Re: Ortlieb vs Alpkit
They do have a slot in the back to add an additional rubber strap/hook for off-road.

Re: Ortlieb vs Alpkit
I’ve used my ortlieb panniers off road and they’ve coped alright but they were a) on a fat bike and b) I use front panniers for the rear as they’re smaller I also used Ortleib panniers off road for years before the soft bag revolution. I wouldn’t choose them over soft bags now for most of what I do...

Re: Ortlieb vs Alpkit
If traditional touring set up is what you want/need then the ortlieb Backroller is as the name says - the Classic choice. Pair it with a set of front rollers and a bar bag for all the storage you’ll ever need. I suspect you’ll now get a whole bunch of advice re soft luggage aka bikepacking bags. Dep...

Re: Substitute for chamois creme
I’ve been ruminating on what everyone is putting down their pants and think you may have this a bit wrong. I should think a chamois cream ought to be both resistant to moisture and something of a lubricant. In terms of skin damage moisture plus friction is a bad combination. Avoiding it is the key c...

Re: Hit me with your Bivy Stick
not quite as free as stated as at some point you will need a new battery - I have a McMurdo Fastfind 220. I replaced the battery for less than £10 after 8 or 9 years. It took a little google and a soldering iron but was easy as you like. The battery pack simply contains AA batteries solered in seri...

Re: Wild camping dog beds
Are you sure you need anything special? Every dog is different but mine is fine on the tent floor or on a rucksack (I only take her backpacking). If it’s cold or she’s really wet I’ll put my primaloft jacket over her but mostly she is ok without - and generally that’s in the vestibule not the inner,...

Re: Hit me with your Bivy Stick
Running costs still remains too high for me to be in. For emergencies you can use a PLB on land in the UK now and they have zero running costs. I don’t pay as much as they want for the minimum package on these things for my mobile contract For one of these tracker/communicators I’d need monthly subs...

Just been doing some sums for Steve :-bd Day 1 - 159 miles Day 2 - 136 miles Day 3 - 160 miles (!) Day 4 - 131 miles Day 5 - 123 miles Day 6 - 145 miles Given the conditions that's pretty good going I reckon  Hats off to Steve on that. He’s using the TT bag I sold him - that’s gotta be worth...

Re: At last!
Just out of interest, does anyone actually take the opportunity when presented to let cars pass on long stretches of narrow road? It's something I'll always try and do when there's a handy gate-hole, lay-by or passing place. I tend not to stop but will slow right down and move into the space. Just ...

Re: Popping pill - TD related (or not)
Is the use of pharma aids directly proportional to the amount of money/sponsorship in a sport I wonder. Money in sport often seems to provide the incentive to win no matter the means. In all walks of life and all fields of endeavour, just beating the next guy is enough incentive to win no matter wh...

Re: Popping pill - TD related (or not)
If drugs aren’t banned on TD or other ITT (they aren’t are they?) then where does the honesty part come in? Competitors are no more required to say how many tramadol or how much ephedrine, salbutamol, synacthen etc they take than they are required to say how many hours of training they did. Are they...

Re: Garmin Solar
If they continue the technology trickledown that they did with 1030/830/530/explore then in a couple of years we’ll get a new explore with USB C - i doubt it’ll have solar but it’d be nice if it had the connector a battery pack. I’m unsure if the new EU charging directive covers GPS but if it does ...

Re: The 2022 Tour Divide watchers thread.
Are PED’s ever discussed in the context of these races? There are no doping controls (I’m not suggesting there should be) and we already know there has been some of the biggest names in this sort of riding who have probably cheated in other ways.

Re: The 2022 Tour Divide watchers thread.
Personally, I can’t help but feel somewhat uncomfortable about the push towards ever less sleep in these sorts of events. It just isn’t sustainable or attainable for most people, and it certainly isn’t healthy for anyone. Maybe my view of human nature is poor but I can only see a drift towards pharm...

That’s gopping Anything more than a week and you need two sets of shorts and jerseys. Wear one/ wash one. Are you really saying that an extra t-shirt and shorts is too much weight, bulk or luxury to carry?

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year (I'verounded it down)!
If you put a shelter away wet, you can get it out in the day at a food stop (if it’s dry) and dry it off in a matter of minutes usually.
Remember, that’s what I did when we camped on Dartmoor.

Re: Have we discussed shelters this year (I'verounded it down)!
I’d personally never use a dyneema shelter unless I wanted absolute minimum weight. The massive extra cost for marginal gain against silnylon is imo unjustified. I’d also be concerned about the non existent resistance to abrasion of dcf. The Mylar coating will rub through in no time if packed wrong ...
