^ friction shifter, easy :-bd the wider spacing between the sprockets on the Linkglide cassette should only make it more tolerant of non-indexed shifting. IME friction shifts work surprisingly well with 9 and 10s chains, as if the main problem pre-SIS was the basic chain and ramp/tooth profile desi...

Yup, Hardraw Force, The Green Dragon. Spent New Years camped there once. That was an experiencewhitestone wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 7:42 am That's Hardraw Force near Hawes, Shaf, the highest waterfall in England. For Cautley Spout you park by the pub (as above it's a temperance pub so no alcohol) and walk in to the fall.

What Colin and Ton said. The only jacket I've ever had that I know I'll stay dry inside whatever gets chucked at it.
Agree, they're not perfect, but the actual waterproof-ness far outweighs any minor design issues.Cheeky Monkey wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 8:15 am They're not a cycling cut, unfortunately, but I can live with it as do others.

Shimano have announced a new drivetrain series which prioritises durability rather than weight. Yay!
But it's not compatible with any other parts, so you have to replace the whole drivetrain. Boo!

Re: Destroying parts!
Very much depends on the type of riding you do and the parts you buy (expensive lightweight parts or cheaper, heavier, but more durable ones, generally - not a hard and fast rule). I like to think I don't do too badly usually, but I did have an off on my old full-sus a while ago where I broke the re...

Nice pics and words - sounds lovely. I've visited the area a couple of times walking, but always meant go with the bike. Nearly did once - driving back from my girlfriend's parents on my own, bike with me, planned to go up the M6 and have a ride on the way. Triggered the trapped nerve in my back get...

Nirvana-live at Reading, only because i was there 1991? Me too - what a day that was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps0ofF1j5Ag The crowd grew massively during the set. Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and Iggy Pop followed (or tried). That dancer was hilarious - just some random that jumped out the crow...

Great read Phil, thanks.
Good to have a reminder about this route too. Definitely one to keep in mind. The scenery looks stunning.

Now this is a terrible confession for someone amused by language but I'm unsure where the apostrophe belongs in that previous post. I blame the Northern Monk Brewery for my lack of clear thinking. <hangs head in shame> Paging that Borderer. Hmm I've tried rearranging the words but no joy. Maybe it'...

Thanks very much! Wish I had use for it too. I used it to make a new treadle for it* at the weekend since the old one didn't fit very well and it was very satisfying and made me want to keep it

Waaaay OT: Shavehorse for green woodworking - solid beech
There's a pretty diverse range of interests here, so I thought this was worth a shot, long though it may be. I made this several years ago to shave some poles for a couple of yurts, and since it's been largely unused. The main body and lever arm are a solid 2" slab of beech felled and milled in...

Yeah, I've done it. Just pumped it out. Only takes a minute or two to get enough for a few days. I decanted it into a little tub like this . Actually find it's easier to apply than the spray - you can dip your finger in to put it on your face rather than spraying it everywhere and trying to rub it in.

Amundsen - great brewery! Agreed. Those Norwegians know how to make a stout too. See also: Lervig. Actually I'm rather surprised nobody's brewed a beer called 'Local Anaesthetic'. It would be quite high ABV I guess. Why not have a very high ABV one called 'General Anaesthetic' too. In fact you coul...

anyone got a plan for this yet ? what kind of time scale for completing the ride ? what kind of distance before sleeping / i need a plan........... :| My advice would be don't get disheartened if you don't make it as far as you might like on day 1. Best options are definitely south of the river. Allendale is a good shout. There's odd bits all over, but there will be necessary road to link it all up. Fortunately most of the roads are lovely too. It's a stiff climb out of Allendale whichever way you go, but if he's used to the Lakes... Maybe ada...

A few years ago, stood in the kitchen at my old house, which was a bungalow in a cul-de-sac on a very mundane, mordern-ish estate, far from any "proper" countryside, when a cow ran full-tilt down the road past the window. Did a proper double-take. A few people, us included, went outside an...
