Re: Monks Trod, or not?
So I chickened out in the end and went around the long way. It was hard going battling against the wind all the way down Claerwen but I comforted myself by thinking that soon I'd have the wind behind me going back northwards. The cycle path along the reservoirs was very pretty. Flat too, and with th...

Re: WRT weather?
I never listen to the weather forecasts, mostly because I have the attention span of a goldfish. This means I get distracted (Oh! Look at the castle) and then I don't know if they've done my bit yet. But anyway I never make any decisions on the basis of the forecast. If it rains, it rains. And anywa...

I'd be worried about bacteria flourishing - food source, water, warmth. It could be a goer if you heated it up first, but I guess then it would all go really soggy by the time you wanted to eat it.

Re: Monks Trod, or not?
Thanks for all the replies. I'm quite tempted to just go for it - a sort of right of passage thing. Thing is, if I have to push all the way at say, 2 mph it's 3 hours. 17 miles around the Llyns will take me 2. Depending on what time I get to the start it might be a goer. In any case, it'll be more o...

I will give you a clue... this is the monks trod - and its the nice bit too. Not the other bits that's are swamp or cut up to neck depth by motocross bikes etc. If you try to follow the old wooden posts for the route have fun! https://c1.staticflickr.com/2/1689/24551215620_20afd80532_c.jpg BBB_0001...

Monks Trod, or not?
So I'm planning for day 2 of WRT17. I've got a decision to make. Is the track from SN 823 671 to SN 899 719 the infamous Monks Trod? And would it be better to squelch across it for 6 miles or follow the tracks/lanes down the length of Claerwen then round Caban Coch, Carreg Du, Penygarreg and up Crai...

Re: Can I change from fat to thin(ner)
What Wheels and tyres are you currently riding? Wheels and tyres are what came with the bike, 'cos I don't know enough about it to think about swapping stuff around. Rims are 82mm and tyres Hodag 3.8, changed over to tubeless. I don't know what pressures I run them at, just go by the thumb-test. I ...

Re: Can I change from fat to thin(ner)
Here you go, even have a Farley as the example! https://www.lightbicycle.com/Hand-built-carbon-27.5-inch-mountain-bike-650b-plus-wheels-50mm-wide-beadless-tubeless-compatible.html Nice, but have you seen the price? That's more than another bike, as someone posted earlier. There's the very thing in ...

Re: Can I change from fat to thin(ner)
Thanks for the replies. It looks like I should be able to find a front wheel OK, but not the back. I could maybe have a go at building one up (actually, they said on the telly yesterday morning that the best way to stave off old age is to try doing new things  ), but from a quick search of the...

I take it you mean between the drop-outs. Front is 135mm with QR. Rear 175mm with 12mm bolt through QR. Dunno what this is called but here's a picture.

That's encouraging, Stu. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? I'll admit I like the idea of still having the option of changing back to the big wheels if the fancy takes me.

Can I change from fat to thin(ner)
My go-to bike for bikepacking is my Trek Farley. I love this bike. It doesn't make my fingers or you know, "down there" go numb. I can ride it for hours. Indeed, to get anywhere I have to, given my slow pace. But I've been thinking that the fat tyres are best for soft stuff like moorland trails (I a...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.
3/3 A comedy of errors. So I was booked on to a course at Llandudno last Wednesday. Hmm! Llandudno is close to Dulyn Bothy. That'll do for my March bivvy. But the course started at 8:45 and I didn't fancy driving up early that day, so booked a B&B for Tuesday night. There's a particularly good chipp...

2/2 Last chance saloon. Depart yesterday afternoon in sunshine, but with clouds rolling in. 15 miles and 2200 ft climbing saw me at Worlds End near LLangollen. This was not my first choice for this months bivvy but the strength and direction of the wind excluded the first. Worlds End is a secluded c...

Re: Todays ride
Don't laugh! Today my grandsons wanted to go to Llandegla. Great. But I had to call at my mums first, (5 miles) so I locked my bike to the carrier and packed my riding gear into a bag to change into. Then to Llangollen (12 miles) to get the boys. Oh poo, I'd left my bag at Mums so back to Mums (12 m...
Re: Canals
You may find that getting the kiddy-trailer through the tunnels is a problem. The tow path is quite narrow. Not a game breaker though; it's easy enough to get off the canal and go around by road

Lluest Cwm Bach....from north or south?
I'm booked on to a course at Llandrindod Wells in the beginning of March so I thought I'd combine it with a BAM night out. Lluest Cwm Bach is the nearest bothy but I can't see a path on Google Earth. I know there must be one (how do people get there otherwise) and I'm guessing it'll be more visible ...
