Re: Hammock underquilt advise please

As above, you do need an underquilt. Some people manage with a closed cell foam mat, but in my experience they move around under you and the whole joy of hammock sleeping is lost. And you'll want a top quilt. No need for a sleeping bag. Unless you have one you can open up like a quilt anyway, Buy st...

Deep breath .... Big Agnes Fly Creek High Volume Ultralight 1 ...... and relax. Nice tent. Light. Packs small. Pitches easy enough if you follow the process exactly. Just too small for a Clydesdale.

Re: I remember my first night out

Jesus Ben, you know how to get folks thinking. Nice one. My mate Warwick and I used to camp out with our BMX bikes back in ... ooooooh ... like 1980. We'd go riding the many, many trails around Mt Coo-tha outside Brisbane. Sleeping bags strapped to our bars and everything else in backpacks. We'd sta...

Re: Wildlife

My morning walk with the dog today was enlivened by the sight of two crows having a go at a red kit. They would dive at it in turns, and the kite would flick itself upside down to present its talons in defence. It's probably three times the size of the crows, but they were incredibly aggressive. Gre...

Re: N+1 for Plus?

I'll repeat what I've said before - tyre width isn't the major thing affecting handling.
It is on my fat bike with three different wheels sizes. The difference in geometry is negligible and sure doesn't account for riding a new bike every time I change wheels.

Re: N+1 for Plus?

How about you get yourself a second hand OO Fatty (NB: other fat bikes are available) and build yourself some 29+ and 27.5+ wheels? I've got just this, set up with discs. Swapping wheels over is literally a 10 minute job to remove the cassette, stick it on the wheelset du jour, fettle the brakes and...

Holy thread resurrection, Batman Went for a ride with my son early doors (he can wheelie like a street scote...) and after cleaning the bikes he went up to his room and I flopped on the sofa and channel surfed till I landed on the 1985 World Snooker Championship replay on the tele. Cracking idea. Coming soon to a bivvy near me. I could take some Spring flowers and use my toilet trowel to plant a garden bed in the woods.

My heart's not fully into the garden idea, Have to say I'm at the other end of this particular spectrum. Spending so many hours starting at my computer screen working from home is as much fun as you might imagine (not complaining: consider myself lucky to still have a job). I've spent at least one ...

Re: Are Carbon bars worth the ££?

As a curve ball, when Spank launched their vibrocore range, a friend of mine tried mimicking the concept by spraying expanding foam into his bars. He reckoned it worked a treat. Sample size =1, YMMV etc., but could be a cheap experiment to improve your comfort? That's a bloody good idea. I shall be...

Re: Are Carbon bars worth the ££?

Ive had a set of EC70 risers for a couple of years, as well as some EA70s. They are exactly the same width, shape and rise and the carbon bars win hands down. Far lighter, for sure, but they are far more comfortable. A couple of hours of bridle paths and what not on board with the aluminium bars and...

Re: Hydraulic v Cable Disc Brakes.

Hope Minis? Wonderful brakes and many years ahead of their time. I had a set on a bike in 2000, I think. After two or three years of use and neglect, I split the bike and stuck the brakes in a box. 17 years later I gave them to a mate who pulled out the bits of ply wood I'd jammed between the pads ...

Re: Squealing rear discs/pads

Worst squealing I've ever had was with Shimano when the pistons / seals develop micro leaks. A change of pads and a good clean will cure it for a short while but it soon returns. Best squealing I've had was in 2018 when the Chilterns Winter Bivvy crew departed the pub. All our brakes were cold and ...
