Re: OT: Murray Walker has left us

I believe "A Mars a day, helps you work rest and play" was one of his creations... Brilliant commentator. Always great fun to hear. His mistakes were always the best bit! Several iconic moments of F1 are burned in my memory by his words and reaction... Mansell mania, Senna crashing on 1st ...

Re: Well done everyone.

I love popping on and reading what people are up to.

I haven't had much to say, but the forum and newsletters have been really important to me.

So thank YOU!

It will certainly be great to get out into the further away great outdoors 😁

Re: The worst journey in the world

When we can, definitely worth visiting the Scott Polar Museum in Cambridge: https://www.spri.cam.ac.uk/museum/ Free to enter and it includes a lot of their letters home and other artefacts, some of them are heart-breaking knowing they are not coming home. I really must go there... I have been to th...

Re: The worst journey in the world

Nansen's story is amazing! The legend of Shackleton saving all of his men was only half of the story... He saved those who sailed with him, but not those on the other ship that landed at the opposite side of Antarctica to lay food depots for him and the pole team. They had a terrible time and a fair...

Re: The worst journey in the world

One of my favourites..

I read Scott's 1912 diary entries to my wife 100 years after the ill-fated expedition every night in 2012. Sounds strange, but it was really interesting and ultimately sad and quite moving...

Always been interested in the "golden age" of Antarctic exploration...

Re: Anyone have a 'micro camper?'

We have a Toyota Hiace Granvia (people carrier) that I have converted to a camper. No bigger than most cars these days. 4x4, rock and roll bed and a unit running down the side with 2 ring gas cooker, sink and cupboards. Suits us and doesn't look too much like a camper. Really wasn't too bad a job to...

Re: Running watch

Have a look at dcrainmaker's site, he reviews pretty much every consumer/activity related device there is. These days the manufacturer will have an app for your smartphone that connects to the device so it's a bit easier to configure but everything else is done on the device. The usual "you pa...

Re: Running watch

Please excuse the potentially ignorant question... I have just started dabbling in running. I currently record my efforts on Strava with my phone. It would be nice not to have to carry a phone when I run. Do these smart watches need to pair with a phone to work, or are they independent data gatherin...

Re: January's Virtual Winter Event 2021 (Covid lockdown edition) Jan 9th and 10th

I’m not comfortable bikepacking after that announcement. See you all in 2022 I guess Maybe we could cycle past each other on a prom somewhere and just happen to stop to drink flasks of our own coffee 2 metres apart sometime 😂. Chew the fat, put the world to rights and something to try and stave off...

Re: FS: Ridgeline Grizzly jacket.

I would be tempted by that, but as you say, a generous cut. I looked up the medium on their website and it comes up as a 46 inch chest!

That's a big old medium...

Shame, as I like a lot of kiwi gear. It just gets on with the job...

Re: Where is everyone?

I must say I have not felt that enthused about bike packing/camping/bivvying/going outside recently, so I haven't been looking as often as a result. Plus I don't feel I have much to contribute very often. I have really missed the BB events this year due to the enforced format changes. I get pretty l...

Well, it's nice to know that many people would still be willing to partake - so thank you for that. However (knew that was coming didn't you), it's looking increasingly doubtful that there will be a winter event in January. I've looked at many different options - some don't even include travelling ...

The 200 is a definitely a mental game, rather than the physical for me. Most days of the week, I know I could ride 200km. However, add Wales, Stuart Wright and a clock and it's a different story! I love the event and the challenge it gives me, but I experience the biggest extremes of emotion when I ...
