Re: "local"? Ask Boris :-)

Kerrin Wilson, Assistant Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, who said of one local rider going 50 to 60 miles: 'What you have to understand is if he falls off his bike and is so far away from home , how is he going to get help if he gets a puncture. Genuine WTF  A puncture? Unreal. "Define...

Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

So, being that waterproof (whatever the preferred term is) which don't have a hole from the cleat to the inside of the shoe, would still benefit from a glue-gun jobby over the excess recess around where the cleat is sat?? Is that what we're saying physics says? If so I might just get the gluegun ou...

Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

Air, yes! I'd already glue-gunnned the holes there. Good place to start. In some shoes it's a hole through to the insole, in others the plate is almost sealed into the sole layers so the difference sealing the holes makes will vary. Had wondered about airflow effect, around the pedal may get the air...

Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

I'm wondering if the cold spot being felt is more to do with pressure than actual temperature. I was thinking along those lines riding home today - started to feel cold at the ball of the foot area first and wondered if it was simply about reduced pressure and blood flow. The shoes fit well, I don'...

I begged a couple of dog poo bags from a walker once on a ride that almost had me howling in pain from the cold-wet : )
Used, for extra warmth?
Seriously, if they were full I'd have taken any warmth available that day

Not read all the replies do apologies if its already on Try an empty family bag of snacks like doritos...thet are large enough to go over feet and ankles so they keep you dry They are silver lined for freshness ? Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

Plastic pedals are, presumably, not as efficient at transferring heat as metal ones? Yes, like pinned resin body flats? Just on a material basis there's a big difference, but I think the real drawback of the SPD system is that plate>cleat>pedal body link between the sole area and the outside. A boo...

Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

Damn my feet were cold yesterday. Was thinking about this as I got that 'standing on a cold stone floor' feeling again, hours from home. As a very rough estimate, looking at the approx surface area X conductivity rates of the materials, a Shimano MTB SPD cleat has around 10x the conductivity value a...

Re: Favourite kit from 2020

Easy for me - Lost Lanes Wales. As much as I like the bike kit side of things I don't buy a lot that really changes things that much for me, I guess I'm pretty lucky in a mix of work-related product availability and low needs. But inspiring a great week-long ride on my doorstep (well, a full day's r...

Re: Rear light?

Really like that Blue Lug light, was looking for similar for my audax bike as a back up. I mounted a Gaciron round light off the brake / guard bridge for a similar effect. Works really well, good light and it sits nicely between the stays above the brake. It's mounted to a piece of Al sheet cut and ...

an old disc brake adapter to mount it inboard of the dropout above the cassette.
Neat :-bd
Sections of chainring get used for front dyno lights and I like re-purposing of bike spares like that, using a brake mount at the back is a new one to me.

Re: Recommend me some.... plus fours?

Thanks PeterC, and Jack, sorry I missed the earlier mention of these and the 32s you had there.

These do look almost ideal though the cotton content would limit the value for me. Hadn't considered climbing/bouldering clothing brands as a place to look though - thanks.

Re: Rear light?

Do you have any M5 mounts on the upper seat stay? I've used a small L bracket to mount a light there. Same bracket type can also fit to the seat clamp via a longer bolt with a few washer-spacers.

If the government had given clear black and white rulings they would have been labeled as dictators, so wrong again. I don't think we would have. The moron columnists would have, instead they're just saying lockdowns don't work etc. Surely what tends to happen with rules that don't seem to have log...

For me the willingness to conform in the general population crumbled after the total absense of repercussions for Dominic "I'll drive my car to check I'm not blind" Cummings jolly up to Barnard Castle. Yep, and they knew it would, and it suits them fine. Tories maybe didn't create the situation but...

Nothing online. The trip was 1999-2000 which pre dates my having a digital camera of any sort by about 17 years! In fact I barely took any photos by modern standards - probably 1 roll Of film a month as was my standard. The trip was unforgettably great. Starting in Kathmandu over the Tribhuvan high...

I hadn't appreciated that your using someone else's fixed ropes for stuff like this which must be a bit dodgy as you've no way of knowing if the person ahead of you has just kicked his front points through said rope...... Re: K2 without O2...

^ interesting, and yes the point about inflation / local value is understood. Less of a criticism of the climbing community, more as a westerner perspective thing I suppose. I paid a rate for a guide in Nepal and was told / discussed / thought the same things then. Interesting to see a little of the...

Watched this last night, it's a brilliant film. 2 thoughts really - seems wrong/embarrassing what porters are paid compared to what westerners pay to climb. And the Baltoro glacier is a really long hike! I expected that, it's clear to see on a map, but this film follows the glacier trek in detail. P...

Not sure if it was posted before a few pages back but 'Safety to Nome' is on Amazon Prime, thought it was worth watching - a 2020 film by Salsa about the Iditarod. Re: K2 without O2...

Gasherbrum IV is stunning. Read The Shining Wall years back - should go back to that one day. How did it go? I've been to Nepal twice and have some sense of how big the mountains really are, and how they look in that clear air and light, but somehow the Karakorum there looks taller, more dramatic st...
