More roadie stuff: me and Dyffers and a couple of others will be joining another 16 teams for a 24 hour ride from anywhere in the UK to York. Leaving Burton on Good Friday morning we're heading to St Neots then north to cross the Humber Bridge at sunrise then hang a left to York for breakfast on Sat...

Go Outdoors are selling a Hi-Gear nylon bivvy bag for £25: http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-bivvi-bag-p143963
No idea if it's any good or not though.

Re: Do you think of your kit as a 'system'?
If your kit is so closely dependent on other items, isn't there a possibility that a single point of failure will render the whole thing useless? Not sure if what you're suggesting is quite that closely related as that, but it bears thinking about. E.g., if you use a hammock but have to sleep in the...

Re: Lovely weather ... anyone out?
Supposed to be out roadie-ing it up on a 200km DIY audax tomorrow, but I sliced my thumb open on a piece of glass this morning  and then fainted and banged my head   . Four stitches in my thumb and a headache to show for it, so I'm nursing a pint of wheat beer and watching Ride the ...

Backpack as well - Osprey Talon 11. Bivvy/sleeping bag on the bars; Thermarest, clothes and tarp in the saddle bag; food, stove, water and jacket in the backpack; everything else wedged in the tangle bag. Too much stuff really, I need to trim down the amount a bit. New PHD bag and vest arrived this ...

Re: Alternative shape handlebars - why?
What are the advantages of these? do you need longer/shorter stems? Are they more/less comfortable? Flat/straighter bars make my thumbs hurt, so I tried Marys to begin with for a bit of sweep - bit didn't like the rise so swapped to Jones J bars. They feel very similar, but the Marys are a bit more...

Re: General Gearing
I tried 32/20 SS on my 29er and got fed up of walking up hills in Wales, though it's fine for local trails and Cannock. I tried a 4 speed lash up (14/17/21/27T) on a splined SS hub and there wasn't enough of an advantage over SS. So I've fitted a 22T granny ring to give me 2x4 and I'll be trying it ...

Having been focussing on this for the last few months, the week before entries open I've had to admit defeat as it overlap's my partners summer holidays (she's a teacher). Pretty depressed about it to be honest. 2012 is looking like the first year in five without a multiday bike event in it. ...

8L Alpkit Airlok Xtra will just about fit a cheap 2 season down bag, bivvy bag a silk liner. 13L will take a small thermarest too, but I find it's a bit big for my bars and obscures too much of the front wheel. I wouldn't put anything I might need in a hurry like a waterproof in the handlebar bag - ...

Re: PHD sale starts March 5th
Though I've only spent a handful of night in the bivvy bag, so far I've not needed to unzip my current bag - so I've decided to get the zipless Minim and see how it goes. If it's that warm out I guess I don't actually need to be in the bivvy bag. The sale is open already, so we'll see what their del...

Re: PHD sale starts March 5th
I'm trying to work out if a zipless bag is right for me. I like the idea of saving loads of weight, but am a bit concerned that it might be too warm. At least with a zip I can cool off a bit, and if I was to go for a zip, I'd save myself £50 and get an Alpkit PD400 instead.Wixey wrote: Ditto....good choice

Like the look of this trip....Have you got a Gps route for it, please? Andy Yes, but I wouldn't follow it if I were you. :D We rode out of Llanwrtyd the wrong way, I wouldn't recommend the bridleway running north from Llyn Brianne and the bridleway heading to the bothy was more like a river. The re...

Looks good! Should've shot some video - those stills from above the Doethie valley don't show just how windy it was, though I'm glad you didn't catch me being blown off my bike.

Anywhere to get one? Know of that Polish bloke who does them. Heard rumours that alpkit and wildcat may be doing one, but dont know if thats true or not? I've got one coming from bikepack.eu - hopefully it'll be better than my 2.7L Ortlieb which is a bit small and not ideal for off road, I've found.

I found Crossmarks a bit sketchy on the front in the wet and mud and swapped to a gert big Ardent instead. If you're mostly riding hard and dry (oo-er) they should be ok - fast and long lasting too.

Re: Wales Road Biking
No need to do a week, you can see the whole of Wales in a weekend on a road bike: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/12-195/ :D It'd make a good week long tour, not just a weekend ride. Anywhere north of the Heads of the Valleys road and south of the A55 would do for a week. but I'm a fan of Mid W...

I'm in. Dyffers, my normal [ish] bivvy partner can't make it so I'll probably be solo for the weekend. Got a vague plan to ride up from Rhayader to the start on the Friday night too and back on the Monday/Tuesday, make a proper weekend of it.

It was a good weekend out - we left Llanwrtyd in the rain but it soon cleared up as we headed into the Tywi forest. We dropped back down to the northern end of Llyn Brianne then headed N along the bog to Dolgoch where a guy staying at the hostel offered to fill our bottles. We then headed straight f...
