Cool, sounds like you're happy so far.
In fact, not cool, I'm looking at converting my bike now...
Be very interested to hear your longer term impressions

Re: Experience of rigid 69er conversions anyone?
From the pics it looks like the front is lower reducing the trail, be interesting to hear if you notice the steering speeding up or feeling twitchier. I think he said the front is actually a little higer than it was before (i think it just looks lower in the pics because the bars are much closer to...

Re: WRT 2012 - open!
Anyone got room in their car for someone living near Leicester? I can give you roughly £40 petrol money as the train will be around that but getting my bike on it would be a right pain. I'll even have a wash before I leave! Can't promise on the way back though...
Cheers,
Matt

Not sure I'll be able to make it or not but I've just paid my money, even if I can't go it's going to a good cause.
It'll be nice to put faces to names if I do make it.

Re: Tools and Spares Kit?
Because I'm so sad I've weighed each item in my tool kit, this is all I carry even when doing multi week touring and I've never needed more: Butyl gloves (stops grease on your hands from ruining the DWR on your waterproof jacket) 10g Tyre levers (Pedro's coz they're the best I've found) 42g Connex c...

Re: My Ti Lynskey has cracked!
I've had a Setavento (short lived custom ti frame company made in China) since 2007, it's done over 50,000 miles, mostly commuting but also weekend road rides, off road commutes at times, twice a week off roading when it's not too muddy (because I'm a wuss), fully loaded touring and all sorts of oth...

Re: Which Bag in Santa's Sack:
+1 on not having a waterproof outer, it never breathes as well so moisture from your body will accumulate inside marginally reducing the loft of the down plus the outer will be cooler than the temperature of the inside which also causes condensation. Having a breathable nylon outer the temperature e...

I've used the flint from a Clipper (the plastic bit that you can pull out) when my weight weenieism was at its worst... Worked pretty well but I'm a smoker again so I use a mini Clipper now.

Re: Highest number of consecutive nights out?
12 days here, that was only a mixture of wild camping and campsites while in France. It's weird, after about a week being indoors seems strange, makes you kind of feel claustrophobic. Sure I read Ray Mears has the Guinness record for most nights spent out in a year, I would probably beat him if I ha...

Re: Groundsheet - genius or just plain dumb?
Ingenious idea, I once woke up with a slug on my lips which wasn't particularly pleasant. Maybe it thought my gob was a beer trap... Guess you'll have to use nail stakes or similar to avoid uneven pressure on the fabric that shepherd hooks would cause? Pics would be cool, I might make one out of Tyv...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread
Lidl's are selling merino wool base layers for 10-15 quid at the mo. The long johns seemed a bit weird so I passed on those but the t-shirt is pretty good quality. Used it this morning and found the neck to be a bit low so it flapped a bit but can only be a good thing in the summer, fabric isn't as ...

Re: Cooking in a bowl, not as stupid as it sounds.
You can't cook in Ti, unless you have a very controllable flame, Sure you can; coz I'm a food ponce I regularly cook carbonara/risotto etc. from scratch using fresh ingredients in my Snow Peak ti pans on my Pocket Rocket (or Snow Peak stove whose name escapes me but suffers from valve creep). I mig...

That Lewis' machine sounds vaguely exciting! :D
Sounds like new is the way to go for you guys, good luck in your search and be prepared to get some funny looks from the ladies in the sewing shops, they normally look at me like I'm a pork pie at a bar mitzvah....

Re: MYOG Sewing Machine recommendations...
That's a pretty big budget for what you'll be using it for, for half that you can get a fairly good one brand new. Maybe have a look at second hand industrial ones, they'll last a life time and after sales tend to be easier to find in some cases. For the projects you mention you'll only really need ...

Just thinking marking the fill level on the inside would make filling easier. Looks really tidy, I'd be happy to buy one like that.

Re: Sleeping bag liners
I've got a lovely silk one and it's not tangled so far, probably be cause it's so sheer. Be warned though, it's bloody freezing for the first 30 seconds!
I use it all the time to keep my bag clean rather than improve the temp rating

Re: Suspension or ridged forks
Yeah, what they said. When you swap from rigid to sus the front end feels very vague and doesn't give you much confidence. Then after you get used to them you swap back to rigid and all the bumps go right in to your wrists and arms until you get used to scanning the ground more so you can react to w...
