Re: What are you reading now?

It's taken me decades to realise that Alfred the Great etc had bog all to do with Cumbria.
You will be all misty eyed about Yr Hen Ogledd

His grandson Aethelstan essentially created England and Britain at Eamont Bridge in 927, and won it outright at Brunanburh

Re: Sit Mat

Pain in the arse to inflate, and weigh a lot more than you'd expect as there's multiple baffles and inner bags inside it. I have some similar ones for beach/ back garden use. Inflation is easy with a breeze. They aren't that heavy as there is nowt to them. Just a nylon bag with an inner plastic bag...

Not sure how I'll filter it but I suppose it'll be good for boiling etc
There is a reason why nobody looks to treat roof collected water to potable standard, boiling kills bugs but doesn't remove other contaminants

If you bought the property you are in then in all likelihood you already have had the utility searches done. Just dig out the pack of info you had during the move.

Re: Things that have recently annoyed me

: a modern toilet uses 6L per flush Flapper toilets are a modern evil, water leaks into the pan and no-one notices or bothers to fix. Second evil is sinks that don't have plugs Look for reasons to do something rather than reasons not to Looked for a long time, unfortunately water is heavy, doesn't ...

Re: Things that have recently annoyed me

I really don't understand why modern builds don't have grey water management systems built in. Sure, foul water needs to go to the sewers but sending grey water there as well just increases the volume of water/material that has to be dealt with leading to increased cost for everyone. Because they d...

Re: Things that have recently annoyed me

My worry is that cyclists wouldn't get off as fewer jurors would see themselves as cyclists who weren't paying attention for a moment like they see themselves in other drivers. If they are being equivalent then there with be a death by careless riding, as we all know the charging decision for drive...

Re: Things that have recently annoyed me

"KILLER CYCLISTS LONG JAIL SENTENCES!!!" screamer. Hilarious. They really are the dregs. Obvious who's behind it too - Grant Shits 'Transport' Minister, a nasty piece of work. Zero issue to anyone who rides halfway sensibly, the unintended consequence maybe that death by dangerous driving...

But upon looking it appears they now have a gravel specific version too. Which I'll assume has better padding or something?
Probably the same, just with added "gravel tax" ;-)

More people = more cocks And more nice people, Those taking part are far fitter than I am, hopefully will close the gates and probably have a great time I think solo/informal FKTs attempts probably skirt away from being a race as there is no organisation, no broom wagon, no start list, no positions...

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

would this be an enviromental agency issue or would it fall to the landowner to clear up?
My understanding is that the landowner cops for the cost of removal, EA might want to check for evidence, don't expect it to result in a prosecution, just another line on a depressing spreadsheet

If canal towpaths count then there’s loads around here
If there isn't a metalled road giving access as well then yes they qualify

Re: Pubs off tarmac

and presumably any pub on an island?
Checks map, looks at UK, rechecks map, errr slightly tighter rules

Some of the pubs in the link are not quite what I was thinking as the access isn't an unmetalled road (private tarmac doesn't count), others look like great targets for future rides

It's a way of coming up with interesting places to travel through and a bit of a hark back to when there some really isolated pubs like the infamous Moorcock Inn on Rooley Moor Road https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/806559 https://www.facebook.com/RochdaleLocalHistory/photos/a.209484865875683/635869...

Pubs off tarmac

I realise some don't like pubs or drink alcohol, but these often provide much needed respite for many Rules are, pubs that can only can be accessed by unmetalled roads or tracks, and you need to have been and supported it by buying something To set you off, something quite close to "civilizatio...
