Re: Clothes layering advice: what under softshell or what on top of merino?

Agree with others merino is a hopeless baselayer for me. I go with a mesh tshirt baselayer (needs to be skin tight) most of the year round, bar peak summer. On top of that goes a short or long sleeve jersey depending on the weather, Torm are worth a look here, in particular their windproofs to solve...

Re: Quilts.... again

I have the valley & peak quilt with the 167 weight apex. If you're a warm sleeper and have a decent mat it should take you comfortably below zero. I was a little cold just before dawn on an uninsulated mat at -3. Pack size isn't bad but its never going to match down in that department. I have th...

Another vote for the dhb mesh ones. I use the tshirt style one year round, unless it's properly hot. They're very fragile though so wash and wear carefully

Re: Overnight laundry service

Presuming everything about the event is run well, the routes are good, the included food (which is breakfast, feed stations, post ride food and four dinners) is good, the entertainment is good and the beer is good I don't view £350 as particularly expensive. It's a lot of money, but I view 'expensiv...

Re: It's the 2021 "What Gravel Tyre...?" Thread

Another vote for Resolutes. Also echo that you need the SG2 version, for the rear at least. At 90kg before bags and water I put holes in a non-SG2 resolute on the rear on 3 rides in a row, that sealant couldn't seal. Took it off and swapped to panaracer SK+ with the additional puncture protection fo...

Have you not heard the buzz about the new Sea to Summit tents? They've reversed the crossbar bend to create increased headroom... It's quite the revolution!

Re: Steel vs Carbon forks for reducing fatigue

I'd say given your mileage increase its not surprising you're suffering a bit. Shoulders will get used to it, could look to incorporate some shoulder strengthening exercises at home. Wrists (and for me, hands/fingers) take a battering riding rigid but you should definitely experiment with different ...

Re: Oval rings. Absolute Black or Absolute B*ll*cks?

I swapped to one about 6 months ago, it was a bit weird for a few rides but once you adapt it feels no different to me. Could be better, could be worse but it's not enough of either for me to notice

Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

Really feel the "I just don't how to behave anymore" line is facetious. The majority of us know how to behave and the majority of us do behave in that way. But, there is a significant minority who either don't, or choose not to. The only thing that has changed is women are increasingly ref...

Re: Garmin Edge 520 plus? advice sought

One thing to note as you mentioned reading glasses, the 500 series screens are pretty small. Readability is great with the backlight whacked up but on auto sometimes I find myself squinting at it when navigating. The 800 series is a significantly bigger screen but also a significantly higher price t...

Probably no good but I have an unused Manitou 100mm dj fork. It's 20mm axle though. Also weighs the same as a small bear.

Let me know

Just in case any future vertically blessed individual stumbles across this in the future, I've decided on a custom trekkertent stealth 1.5 with a bit of added length. Marc was very helpful, sizing looks ideal, weight is good and get to support a small UK manfacturer so :-bd all round

Thanks Box, Ben & Dog. I'll have a look at those suggestions, seems the Americans are served very well by cottage tent makers, wish importing them over here wasnt so damn pricey.

Ps - I'll believe the quality on that korma when I see it

Definitely a familiar feeling. I think the relief of it finally being sorted is somewhat overtaken by that nagging sense that you've spent god knows how many hours on a job that *should* have taken 10 minutes.

Re: What Bike

I'd vote for a suspension fork if you have hand or wrist issues. They really make an almighty difference offroad. Rigid with a flexy carbon/steel fork, fat tyres, soft grips etc all help but don't come close to the difference a decent suspension fork will make.
