Re: Newbie bikepacking tent advice

Hi. I'm late to this discussion but here's my opinion. I'm I real cheapskate, making do rather than splashing out more often than not, however when I started bikepacking in 2020 I decided the one thing I was not going to skimp on was a tent. It is your home after all when you're tired and in a stran...

Re: Iceland Divide 2024: need advice on tent, sleeping mat and stove

I've got a copper spur. Love it but there's no way I'd be taking it to Iceland.
South Downs are great for exposure. Any decent storm on a convenient night, ride down there after work. You'll arrive knackered around 10pm +. Perfect experience 😆

Re: Iceland Divide 2024: need advice on tent, sleeping mat and stove

You've certainly come to the right place to ask. These guys helped me loads in the beginning. What I have learned is that nothing can replace the knowledge gained by many nights out in remote places. I only have time for short trips but even single nighters teach you something each time. Purposefull...

Re: Protein Suggestions

I was interested so I had a look at the Amfit ingredients.
It's vegetarian friendly and looks like the only non food ingredient is the sweetener Sucralase.
Quite impressed actually. Thought it'd be appalling.

Re: Protein Suggestions

Blueberry cheesecake from MyProtein, or lemon cheesecake from Amfit are nice enough to be drunk for pleasure. Just! Am currently drinking a glass of milk though as it was in the fridge and I was thirsty. Best not overthink things too much. For me, weight training before work, on my feet all day, the...

Re: Protein Suggestions

I regularly eat three eggs a day, again after doing my research to decide who to believe. Stopped eating supermarket chicken and pork after finding out about industrial farming methods. Bridge to far for me.

Re: Protein Suggestions

I think it's erroneous to dismiss protein shakes as not real food. It's simply the whey part of milk (the curds being used for cheese production). It's pretty well purely protein too so very handy if you want to increase your intake without going crazy on the calories. As someone who doesn't eat chi...

Re: All night lights

I use an Exposure Strada mainly these days as I love being able to dip my lights for cars using the thumb blipper. Add duration with 10ah power banks. They're only about £15 each. Put them in sandwich bags to weatherproof them.

Alternatively I've got a Hope r4 with a monster 6 cell battery pack.

I needed one last year. Rang my surgery and the office team got a doctor to sign the template I'd provided. Bought them a box of chocolates as a thank you.

I've had two spag bols from EF turn rancid. Both times I had nothing else to eat for dinner. Bad nights!

I tried couscous packets. Overwhelmingly bland and stodgy. Frankly, Pot Noodles are nicer, which is a sad state of affairs. 😆

Mmmmm. Nice!
My local international shop is a trove of interesting options. They have packs of different types of Bombay mix like stuff. 1000kcal for £2/200g

Re: Which freeze dry meals would you recommend?

Cheers.
I've been thinking that veg options would be good. It's always the little chunks of meat that never properly rehydrate, and they don't bring much to the party.

Sorry. I meant Expedition foods not Adventure Foods.
Have been quite happy with them so far, even when hydrating with cold water. Just wondered if I was missing out on some gems from other brands.

Which freeze dry meals would you recommend?

I'm planning a 3-4 day hike (Paddy Buckley round) and fancy travelling super light and simple: Bivy gear. Water filter. Stove. 3 x freeze dry meals/day Pack of tunnocks/day I've only ever used Adventure Foods. My favourites being: Sweet and sour chicken and rice. Thai chicken and rice Beef and potat...

I use the same as you. Clifton 8s for road and speedgoats for trail. Work perfectly well for me.
I also love my Altra lone peaks when I'm in the mood (which is becoming more often it seems)

Re: Next weekends BB200

Well for me, I'd entered, but whilst riding for 4 days through Snowdonia at the beginning of October, including that massive deluge on the Friday before the first BB, I realised that this was enough. I no longer wanted to test myself against the limits, I was happy just riding for 12hrs a day and se...

Re: BB200/300 2022 edition (no spoilers)

Was with you guys in spirit. Rode Thursday to Sunday on a 200mile tour of Snowdonia. The big storm on Friday found us above Bleanau Ffestiniog, making the descent down through the old slate mines very atmospheric. What a stunning part of the world. Epic riding and amazing scenery. A little mild peri...

Rail strikes the day before I travel

Sorry for being needy. It's just that I haven't had a proper trip since February and I'd like the getting there part to not be the lasting memory. Planning on riding the Cycling UK Snowdonia route N to S on Thursday 6th Oct - Sunday 9th. Current plan is to drive to Shrewsbury early and get a train a...

That's the route I'll be riding in a few weeks! Got a sneaky preview from a mate in the business.
Plan on riding north to south and incorporating a trip up Snowdon.

Re: Favourite 'Events'

I've not done a bikepacking event yet, but my favourite weekend this year was spending a Saturday at Bikepark Wales, riding up the climb then bombing the descents, 2000m over about 6 hours with the Craig Charles Funk and Soul playlist in my ears. Sunday was the Hope Mtb Marathon at Builth Wells. The...

Re: Packable v Heavyweight Waterproofs

I'm wearing my Endura MT500 jacket today, working in the rain. It's been demoted to general wear after buying an Outdry.
It's totally wetted out, and I'm damp and cold. It's a beautifully constructed jacket but it only stayed truly waterproof for one trip. Save your money.

Re: The 'why?'

I was with my buddy, planning our upcoming Snowdonia trip last night. The route from Llandudno to Mach could be done in 63miles on the A470. Our route will top 160 miles as it wriggles around to visit places of interest. Our conversation was all about nice views, places to eat, historical sites etc....
