Re: Missing the point?
'an adventure trail' or 'adventure/gravel' means more people understand what it is. Goodness knows what yer visitor centre punter makes of it. Maybe we should stand at the entrance and do a survey  . "Have you any idea what's being described here before you set off? Do you think you nee...

Re: Water Filter
Surprised to see the issues reported with the Water to Go bottle. Bought one for a trip to Nepal and in 3 weeks had absolutely no issues with the bottle or with my tummy. 2 other party members did which was 50% of the group. Found it dead easy to use and drank from the bottle most of the time with o...

I'll add another big thanks to Dee and Stu for organizing what has become my favorite event of the year! Another brilliant edition helped in no small part by Mr Climber and his intrepid gang who put up with me and were great fun to ride and bivi with over the weekend. Sleeping yards from a se...

I think this is a very personal thing? I know people who would consider booking a different Tui holiday to the one they do every year would be wildly adventurous :???: Others who feel going to a pub different to their local is an adventure too far  Suspect an "Adventure Holiday" to th...

Re: The pickled egg (and other bar snacks) thread
I have a Yorkshire friend who has fond memories of when she was a kid getting treated to a pickled egg in a bag of crisps back in the day! In Nepal a "packed lunch" in the remote regions was 2 hard boiled eggs, in the shell, wrapped in a Chapatti with a bit of foil round it. Surprisingly f...

Just finished Unreliable Memoirs by Clive James, first read it 40 years ago and revisiting following emigration to the UK and living here for 30 odd years made it quite a different experience. Very funny and documents a time past when the world was a very different place. Would recommend

I'm afraid the plants and animals will have to go How do you see that working out for your children and grandchildren? I would point out that those plants and animals you are so quick to dismiss need exactly the same things your children and grandchildren will need. It is becoming increasingly obvi...

About a quarter way through One Man goes Trekking (With she who must be obeyed) by Ketan Joshi. very entertaining and funny and interesting at the same time. Interesting as English is possibly not his first language and it hasn't been edited to clear up the odd word usage and sentence structure. Not...

Having finished the very disappointing 'Goth - a history" I'm now on the interesting "The Silent Hills of Shropshire" by Malcolm Saville, it's definitely making me want to go and explore the Long Mynd much more! I hardly ever ride there. I don't live near the Long Mynd but have been ...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?
I often think there's a lot of confusion between 'saving the planet' and 'saving ourselves'. If we'd like to save ourselves or at least extend our potential time here, then yes, behaviour needs to change. Yet, if we'd like to save the planet, then eradicating the human race as quickly as possible w...

Good to see the youths taking an interest in this  Never thought of it like that, only 1 in the crowd was around 20, Looks like our generation is a dieing breed. Too interested in their gaming now I guess. Reckon for a certain age group "being into bike packing" involves following s...

I use Heat Holders to sleep in when its cold and really like them, but then I don't especially suffer with cold feet. I have a friend who uses them as well and does suffer from cold feet and now uses them on Duke of Edinburgh as well.

Stewart quotes from 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush' by Eric Newby in that book, which I highly recommend - not just an insight in Afghanistan but also the world in the 1950's.

Really enjoyed Eric Newby, The last Grain Race was my fave and really enjoyed A Short Walk too.

Just finished The Man in the Tent by Toni Beardsall, He was struggling mentally and in middle age decided to take up camping and that led walking and then moved into a tent full time and much of it wild camping. Quite light hearted and an interesting read.

I've used a flat Tarp for years and no bivvie bag and did so when back packing before taking up bike packing some years ago. Love this setup for all of the reasons listed already, especially the feeling that you are in the landscape rather than isolated from it in a tent. Been out in all sorts of we...

Swiss Army knife, bought in 1983 and been everywhere with me. Bit bigger than the normal pocket knife and lives in a pouch on my belt, it remembers the days when it was allowed on planes unchallenged! Blades are very worn and struggle to hold and edge now and it is nearly time to retire it and order...

Alpkit do a 100l (think there is a smaller version as well) duffel with a weatherproof zip and it comes with backpack straps attached but no wheels. Love it's size as everything goes in it and I can travel with just 1 bag. Had mine a few years now and its been bulletproof!

Tomorrow will be a lot cheerier than it might have been. Emergency op to fix a torn retina yesterday, after a previous attempt with lasers two weeks ago. This time they used cryotherapy - freezing with liquid nitrogen. Scary stuff. Only a local anaesthetic. I don't think they actually pop your eyeb...
