That's brilliant. Tweed jackets, hike a bike and smoking tabs. I wonder how many hills they had to walk down due to inadequate brakes?

Re: Bargain Alert Thread
There are a couple of good looking retro ATBs on Facebook Marketplace in Cockermouth, Cumbria for a good price if anyone's into that sort of thing. Nothing to do with me, and I haven't got the time to ride the bikes I've already got: https://www.facebook.com/groups/136171799736852/permalink/72798053...

Re: EU bike shop charges!
When it comes to VAT/duty you are dealing with a bit of the state apparatus that you really, really don't want to be messing with  My dad would say that if the Inland Revenue turned up he'd make them stand outside in the rain, if the customs/VAT man turned up he'd just say "in you come&qu...

Re: Are you analogue?
The bike that I ride the most is fully rigid with mechanical disc brakes (gotta move with the times) and 2 X 9 gears with a friction shift thumbie for the front. It's like going back to the 90s with better geometry and brakes that actually work in the wet. I've barely touched my hard tail since I go...

Either Tevas or Keens, whichever are nearer the door when I'm heading out.

Re: What summer mat is flavour of the year?
I use an Uberlight for 3 seasons and rate it. As long as the ground isn't already frozen when I set up camp it's been good for me. I use a full length wide mat, I don't mind carrying a little extra weight for a good night's sleep.

I biked over quite a few of the Back o' Skiddaw tops last year, it's a fantastic and underrated area where even someone as unfit as me can actually do a fair bit of riding rather than pushing.

Loads of camping trips as a kid in the local woods, my mates and I had our first "proper" backpacking trip to The Lakes when I was 14 in 1986. Crap sleeping bags, plastic bivvy bags, Cobmaster external framed rucsacs, building site waterproofs, Baked beans, tinned hotdogs and Beanfeast to ...

I used the free version of Fatmap when I walked the Camino Primitivo last year and found it very useful. If I was going to be walking or cycling a lot abroad, especially away from marked trails, I'd happily pay for it.

Re: Geometry question - not maths homework.
This is very specific, with a sample size of one (me), but I had to pack in mountain biking in my twenties after a bout of carpel tunnel syndrome. I returned to it a few years ago when my son showed an interest and had the same issue, despite my new bikes being more upright than my old 90s mountain ...

Yes please Chris.
On second thoughts, scratch that mate. Give it to someone who's actually likely to do it in the next couple of years.

Looks great Geoff, the work you did is paying off.
If it's any use to you, I've found that those bags of self-lighting charcoal are a good alternative to carrying wood if you're going somewhere with a fireplace.

Beautiful area, very understated around there

Agreed. When I moved to the area from Cumbria I had very low expectations, but I discovered loads of great bike rides and walks in beautiful countryside.

Fog can be really odd, especially in darkness. My strangest experience was in daylight though, when I was canoeing on Loch Shiel. It was so thick I had to paddle on a bearing using a compass on the thwart, and I seemed to be in a dome of clarity about 10m wide. The only sounds were those made by me ...

Good luck to him, but I wouldn't fancy pushing a bike over miles of sastrugi, especially a bike with a heavy horse-drawn sledge attached.

Re: Ventile - Alpkit Jump the Wagon
I have a Ventile jacket that I only really use when I know that it's going to be windy all day, especially when it's cold. I find it much more breathable than synthetics and it's very quiet. Not that I'm sneaking around creeping up on unsuspecting beasts or people I hasten to add.
