Re: Something for the coffee snobs.

Ehtiopean coffee is typically served with the beans pan roasted just before brewing. I used to work with an ethiopean guy who also ran a small cafe where they did this. It smells amazing, it is a really nice experience, served out of "the mother" - something like this https://upload.wikime...

Re: Something for the coffee snobs.

Home roasting is a seriously crazy hobby (from the few I’ve met who do it) with the associated crazy costs. Don’t know any of the welsh roasters, I’ve only spent an afternoon in Cardiff a couple of years back, but I’d be surprised if there weren’t a Multitude of options :) As slightly relati...

Re: Something for the coffee snobs.

it's still getting to the point where a cheaper supplier for every other batch would start to make sense... Anyone else got any recommendations? :geek: Where are you base Matt? There’s been an explosion of specialty roasters and cafes in the UK in the last 3-5 years. There’s a good chance there’s s...

Re: Ireland - south/west - suggestions?

Cycled the Sheeps head pensinula over the weekend. All on road, but generally very quiet roads that weren't really proper asphalt, but not quite gravel either. Tough riding with lots of up and down. Excellent views and relative isolation. Highly recommended.

Re: Ireland - south/west - suggestions?

Yeah I cycled through a fair bit of Ireland last year, so quite familiar with narrow roads and fast traffic! Scariest roads I had on my trip from wales>Ireland>France>Corsica>Sardinia>Morocco were in Ireland. But never made it down more south than Clare. Another friend mentioned Dingle - checking th...

Re: Ireland - south/west - suggestions?

Come to think of it, I think the Wicklow reputation is for downhill - not necessarily any longer off road. Though there were some enjoyable forestry roads where I stayed.

On road cycling is fine. Slarge, any particular favorites? Seems the peninsulas are a common suggestion online.

Re: Ireland - south/west - suggestions?

No that’s too far off my experiences. I’ve mainly walked here anyway. People do cycle the Wicklow way, but I haven’t paid too much attention to other bikepacking spots - but Wicklow I’m general has a good rep for off-road.

Re: Quilt Fabric

I recommend a closed footbox. The versatility of an open footbox isn’t as great as you think unless in hot areas (nowhere in the ok  ) vs the amount of warmth you lose when it’s cooler. You can stick a leg out if you’re really hot, but i find a closed footbox helps keep th quilt in the right s...

Re: Quilt Fabric

I used the 10d. It's comfortable and light. Breathes well (not quite as well as RSBTRs HyperD fabric) and is known for it. Unsure if it's better than those other options. I chose it because ultimately i was making a lightweight quilt to be lightweight. Compromising on the lightweight goal for the sa...

Re: Coffee bags or other options

Grind beans fresh/the day before going and use a reusable tea pouch is a good call. If you already take a cup in addition to a pot for boiling water, I’ve found making “cowboy coffee” and gently decanting it into the cup (the grinds sink the the bottom and stay there if you’re gentle) surprisingly s...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

I wonder if they’ve upped it on the lightweight stuff recently?
On the product page for the HL pad it says 5 years now as well. I was also under the impression their lightweight stuff had a 2 year warranty but can’t find any mention of that on the current site.

Good luck. I’ve also managed to get some left over fabrics by posting wanted ads (like this one) here and on trek-lite and other lightweight hiking/biking groups where folks are inclined to make their own gears.

Re: Off Cuts

Extremtextil and AdventureExpert both list offcuts on their site - they’re the only EU stockists of apex. Neither had any online when I made my quilt - but I emailed both to ask anyway. AE checked their stock and found some pieces that suited (one was 2.1m long, so enough for my partners quilt - and...

Hmm. Just testing my Exped HL mat. Finished blowing it up, looked up to check it and the joint between the middle two channels has blown along the whole length. No, I didn't overinflate. Ho hum. Lasted me a fair while I suppose. OK, 30% off: https://www.outdoorgb.com/p/Exped_SynMat_HL_M_Sleeping_Ma...

In the latest instalment of "Landslide horrifies proper coffee snobs", these arrived yesterday: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/m-EAAOSwWtpch9XP/s-l300.jpg Provocative  I’ve heard folks complain about these being quite weak. Apparently they’re about 7-8g each, which would be half the...

Re: slippery silnylon bathtub floors and thermarests

That’s the common go. Another effective (but oft stinky or muddy!) solution I came up with on a several month trip with minimal gear or money to solve gear shortcomings was to jam my shoes under whichever end I was sliding toward. If On some rear occasion I was on perfectly flat ground, I usually ja...

What’s the weight of the “reign”? I’ve used one of their discontinued hiking models, which I liked until fell apart after about a year of regular use.

Warm and wet also (this applies to all “waterproof” kit, but especially feet). The key to making this work is having multiple pairs of socks. If weather is meant to be dry I’ll take an extra pair to change into in the tent at night, and keep them on the next morning, while letting the others air out...

Oh right! Sorry yes misread. Will be curious if you can taste a significant difference and if the ease of use is notable. Haven’t seen any speed tests with the 1zpresso, but from what I’ve heard about the hario it should be a lot faster to use.
