Re: Proposed Wind Farm near Glaslyn

Micro-hydro schemes certainly have their place. A lot of disturbance during the installation but nature does hide things quite well given time. It'd be interesting to see the current state of the ground around the scheme being installed in 2017 above Loch Claire in Torridon. There's a micro scheme ...

Re: A Trossachs Overnighter

Eventually, I made it over to view Loch Lomond from above. Now, that descent down is steep. Steep enough to walk down a lot of it. I didn’t want a fall or a mechanical. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ADCreHd4nDBLH-PJ8a185-FlPZjO-1SIh48jtAECX0xbCvfjSAOksUYV5jUMppUloo34lXH3oenq1oSeSLR4LTGIkOsAD...

Re: Everythings gonna be bloomin aching!

Can you get stung by nettles if your arms and legs are already one continuous nettle rash? Shaf if you were not aware the Refill app shows you where you can get free water from a water fountain/tap or from a catering establishment (though you might need to ask a cafe multiple times to get that much ...

Re: Decent lock for bikepacking

I use an Abus combination cable lock. It will barely stop anyone with a decent pair of nail clippers let alone a battery angle grinder. Most insurance requirements for bike locks will rule out bikepacking anyway whatever lock you use as they require indoor storage storage behind a locked door etc. ...

I went full length sleeve and full finger gloves even in the heat, it saved my skin from UV and the brambles/nettles which were handlebar-high. My shins however were a state.

Anybody ridden the King Alfred Way in the last week or so? Just wondering how nicely it's running, was thinking about an overnighter on it tomorrow, to shake down everything before the NYM300. TIA I rode it two weeks ago, some sections were heavily overgrown (canal out of Reading for example, on so...

Re: Cheap OS topo maps on a Garmin with no microSD card slot?

Some have questioned whether they are legit or not, I guess we just don't know for sure. I know a group were buying Garmin GPSMAP devices secondhand in the UK to take to Bulgaria/Romania and resell (as Garmins were considerably more expensive in Lev/Leu than in Sterling), so would recoup some money...

Find it interesting that after over 48H Sofiane is still behind Josh and lots of others. Does that mean his 'I won't sleep cos it's not gonna screw my body up after, and the race is well worth it' isn't working for him. Or have they all adopted the same strategy  Sofiane said on Instagram that...

Re: 2 TO 3 DAY LOOP IN Scotland First bikepacking trip

Cairngorm Loop can be ridden multiple ways, overnight shelters at the fancy Glen Feshie place, Ryvoan or Red House and lots of places to wildcamp. Or Middle loop of HT550 starting at Fort Augustus, multiple spread out bothies (if you like pushing your bike).

Is anyone familiar with a, mainly, traffic free cycle route between Scarborough and Whitby called the cinder track? I'm heading up to Yorkshire with family next week and we're planning to cycle this route, but I've heard various stories about the trails surface, with it "appearing to be 99% pa...

Re: HT550 2023

I have just come back from weaving across Northern Scotland for six days from JoG to Blair Atholl - the boggy ground I have done before seemed drier (can't vouch for Road of 1000 Puddles). However the ticks were atrocious, I removed more ticks from my legs on this trip than in all previous 15 years ...

Re: The Pictish Trail - more Scotlandshire for you.

We looked into the theory of getting a train from Manchester to Thurso. No possibility of taking a bike, so seems lime a bit of a non-starter. Is it due to a number of the trains actually being buses. I'm not a prolific public transport user, so know little about these things! 10:21 Manchester to H...

Related PSA: you can now use Trainline to book bike tickets across multiple train operators for a single trip. Just booked London-Wick (LNER and Scotrail x2) in one ticket without needing to call someone.

My sleeping bag has its own cylindrical dry bag, which is 5mm narrower in diameter than my handlebar drybag. Slides straight in and leaves much more room for other items than if it was stuffed by itself.

What size is it? Should be a label in non-drive pocket, otherwise measure the length along the top tube?

If it is a Large/19.5" I would like it.

 I had actually been wondering the best route to the Shielding if Mark Bothy  It's not so obvious on OS or aerials. Rab are using it in sleeping bags as well:

Not sure how comfortable it would be next to skin, perhaps full thermals are a necessity.

Re: What lights?

You don't have to have both. I often just ride with a helmet light. Prefer it as it is always pointed where I'm looking rather than in the direction the bars are facing. Off-road I like to have a small light on the bars and main light on helmet, so when I am looking around at speed there I can see ...
