Re: Lachlan Morton on the great divide

I was wondering not so long since if the FKT thing may have it's day. It now boils down to just how far you can go without sleeping and seems to have moved away from the whole 'adventure' thing. There was quite a while when getting a fast time on a route meant a combo of nous, riding ability, fitne...

Re: New long distance Cycle UK route in Wales - Traws Eryri

We live not far from the PBW and the section between Gisburn and Long Preston is little used even by the horse riders - lack of parking. livery and other facilities is one reason I've been told. For bikers it's probably that the section is lowland and gets overgrown very easily unlike the Pennine a...

Re: New long distance Cycle UK route in Wales - Traws Eryri

I don't see a problem apart perhaps from one... I'm not sure there actually is a problem Bob, my comment was just one of surprise. However (and didn't you know that was coming), I was just thinking and am further surprised that it's not a circular route given that there's no direct train link betwe...

Re: New long distance Cycle UK route in Wales - Traws Eryri

I don't see a problem apart perhaps from one... How much "notice" are businesses and the like given that there's a new route going to be promoted that passes by their door? On a different scale but the promotion of the NC500 seems to have been done without consideration to the local infra...

Re: Traws - Eryri new North Wales route

Looks good for me as I'm only 1 mile from the finish in Conwy. However try not to be 'deceived' from some of the images in the Route Guide, as some photos are not from the route. Again with it being under the banner of CUK, they have to stick to legal ROW. They do say they are working on some issue...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

I'm confused now ... I keep seeing the word 'illegal' in relation to Dartmoor, so does that mean that Dartmoor has now pulled rank over the rest or England / Wales, where wildcamping isn't illegal as it isn't a criminal offence or are some folk simply not making a distinction between criminal / civ...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

However, the land you slept on belongs to someone and that someone didn’t give you permission to be on their land … you are trespassing, you’re a bad person. I would argue you are only a "bad person" as a LNT traveller if you refuse to move on if asked by the landowner or his appointed re...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

Yep looks pretty definitive unfortunately Yeah. On the other hand, the Byelaw prohibiting MTB on Dartmoor is, arguably, much more open to question. There are valid questions as to it’s proportionality and reasonableness, given the extent of the prohibition (ie. Not just banning riding done in sensi...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

To widen this slightly there is a right to "air and exercise" on common land in England and Wales It's never been tested but I would suggest that LNT wildcamping could easily be argued to be "air and exercise" Not on all common Land, only on S193 commons (commonly called urban c...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

They've possibly scored an own goal there. There's a legal presumption that if the legislation doesn't say you can't do something then you can. So in this case because it doesn't specifically say/legislate that you can't wild camp you can. With most thing's the list of permitted activities/acts far...

Re: Great British Divide

The 'no racing on ROW's' is aimed squarely at preventing massed starts and massed groups of riders charging around a place at break neck speed to the annoyance of other users. A large group of people setting off on a bike ride at once may also cause annoyance to other trail users and lead to compla...

Re: Great British Divide

Having mentioned individual 'K[Q! ]OM'/'FKM' above, an interesting question to me is is an individual racing 'against themselves' breaking the law? By that I mean "I want to do this particular 'route' in less than 12 hours". My previous example is a lone person not comparing thems...

Re: Great British Divide

Let's be clear. ITT's & FKT's are still illegal on Bridleways in England and Wales S31 Road Traffic Act 1988 specifically outlaws any form of race or trial of speed on a public way (any highway), unless done according to regulations. Those regulations identify two types of event - cycle racing a...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

I think one the the things there Psling is that actually much of this comes back to the access debate (and how the public image of off-road cycling affect that too) There are a lot of routes that are physically suitable for all the users you identify above... but they don't have the legal status, un...

Re: King Alfreds Way.

In a similar vain - how many bikepackers actually 'race'. I'd estimate the number is quite limited, yet the amount of coverage given to it would perhaps have you believe otherwise. I do appreciate that 'racing is sexy and can be packaged in a way that 'Mike and Norm's wet ride' can't  Oh my w...
