Maps for my phone - alternative to OS Maps?

Am looking for suggestions for maps on my phone. I normally use OS Maps Premium but the subscription is out and they want £35 to renew. So thought I would see if there is something better. I'd like 1:25k maps, to be able to import GPXs and follow them, to be able to download maps offline, and to be ...

a Sea to Summit Cinder Down Quilt from their sale. I'd tried the Alpkit quilt before and found it too cold (seems it is generally poorly reviewed) so hopefully this is one works better for when I don't want to take my sleeping bag. The bags and info leaflets it comes with are quite nice :) @yourgui...

Re: Folding Bikes - Experiences..

I have a Tern 20" one that I got from FB Marketplace for £100 in very good condition. It's one of the more basic models - rim brakes and 8 bottom spec Shimano gears etc . I use to go in the boot of the car or to leave in the back of my campervan in case I want to cycle to a pub or toilet that's...

Re: What you done t' your bike today

Today's job was to replace the Magura Mt master cylinder that I broke in a crash. Went Ok apart from a) not realising there was an olive already in the replacement master cylinder which I crushed and then slightly damaged the threads fro the hose entry while levering it out. Ended up having to retap...

Re: Wild Country Zephyros Compact 2 Tent Opinions Please

I had the 2 man XL lite version.
Great tent. Easy to pitch well, well designed and robust. Lives in it for 3 weeks in a row.

I only sold it as I only ever camped alone (thought my girlfriend might come along but nah) so went for something smaller.

Re: I am weak

Update In the end I got a 42t Microshift cassette and a Shimano GRX 2x111 (RX810) derailleur off of the CRC close down sale. Fitted them today and shifting is nice and smooth. Although the maximum cassette for that mech is meant to be up to 40t, the 42t is no problem and didn't require a goatlink o...

Packraft for sale

I'm selling my Nortik Trekraft. I actually think I bought it off someone on here? It has done good service - multi day camping trips down the Tay and Spey, day trips and bikerafting over Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom. https://i.postimg.cc/gJH9GQZq/PXL-20240322-100705678.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/X...

I was out for a very easy ride (with a pal who doesn't really MTB) at a mini trail centre in some woods near the back of Falkirk. Pretty family friendly stuff, green/blue grade stuff. Not even any drop offs. Apart from one track which has an unsigned gap jump on it! I almost made it, but now have pe...

I have a Garmin Campervan satnav I used for a trip to Europe.
It shows you the elevation and steep gradients:

Your shoe size number is related to the size of an ear of Barley.
The standardisation of bolt threads (via the Whitworth thread) is said to have played an important part in Britain winning the Crimean War through helping gunboat production. I guess that brings it a little closer to the topic...

Re: An interesting bikerafting route up in the Highlands

At danger of being called a metric using whippersnapper, I'm seeing it as

2389 metres of elevation in 185km of distance which equals just shy of 13 metres (12.91) of elevation per KM of distance.
Though obviously it won't be distributed evenly!

An interesting bikerafting route up in the Highlands

Saw this on bikepacking.com: https://bikepacking.com/routes/glenha-bikerafting-loop/ Looks quite interesting, not overly challenging and seems to be quite a good use of the raft to allow you to follow a route you couldn't do without one. The figure of 8 route means you could do it in smaller chunks ...

Specialized Tactic 4 from Tredz at £41.99 down from £80 plus best ranking mtb/emtb helmet and 3rd overall regardless of price as tested by Virginia Tech https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html They seem to be £40 at a lot of online shops, so handy if you are buying something else...

Re: Bike Abuse, Am I bad?

Two semi-conflicting themes for me. 1) A bike that is left in the back of the shed or somewhere for months will generally be good to go with just a wee spot of air in the tyres and potentially some chain lube. 2) Spending time cleaning a bike normally means I find lots of little bits on it to tidy u...

Hello, am back from my holiday. In the end, we didn't camp at all. Rooms in nice (if basic) Riads/hotels were about £20 a night between the two of us... We also didn't do much hiking in the end, a couple of 2 or 3 hour ones. We were travelling to different towns each day. Can definitely see the appe...

Re: All day comfortable, do-it-all waterproof trousers?

So, after mulling this over for a while, I have just received a pair of second hand Paramo Velez trousers in the post. They seem closest to what I'm looking for and if they don't do the job I can sell them on for no/low cost. Will test them out by riding to work (20 miles) in the rain. And while, sa...

Re: Lightweight touring rack | Tailfin? Other alternatives?

Tortec ultra lite works well for me. Easy to fit, robust enough for anything my bike can do off road (with 38mm tyres). Can take panniers and the platform is big enough to put bags on top. They're less than £30, so not a big expenditure to try it out. Would recommend Ortlieb gravel panniers too. The...
