Re: Quad lock vs SP connect

I’ve just bought an adhesive Garmin mount and a spare case for my phone. Seems a pretty good (cheap) solution, although my iPhone XR is a big lump and it does leave me slightly nervous over sustained big bumps. Thats just what i did with a £2.99 case and a £4.50 garmin adhesive mount which came wit...

Re: Bob's First Bivvy

I've still got pretty much the same setup, although I've somehow lost my goretex bag? Was actually about to ask the question "what to do to lighten it a bit?". My 2p, ditch the aeropress and take a coffee bag. Less weight and bulk. Tear the bag open afterwards and scatter/bury the used coffee, take ...

Yup please

On a related note, screwfix have their site branded bamboo LS thermals on sale at the moment. You have to dig for it on the website as its not labled as bamboo.

Re: Bell + drop bars + bags

Ive got the fake chinese version of the spurcycle bell, its nowhere near as nice as the real thing. I do like the fact its silent when just riding allong though, not rattling about making a racket. Worth £50, debatable. Its nicely made, it wont rust, it sounds nice. So its certainly better than anyt...

Re: Ethical and Environmental Options

I could probably dig it out but broadly a fairly efficient car is about 200g of co2 per km (not the 100 it says on the advert for a prius driven on a rolling road). So london to glentress as an example is 160kg of CO2. For manufacturing there are rules of thumb like 5kg per kg of steel (for bulk stu...

Re: Tell me about budget turbo trainers.

My 2p. The minoura magnetic resistance trainers, hypermag etc mostly share the same resistance units, just with different weight flywheels. And mostly have the same 1- 7 or L-1......5-H resistance levels so will work with trainerroad or sufferfest where you put it in one level and change resistance ...

Re: Ethical and Environmental Options

Worth bearing in mind that the environmental impact of a bag made in china from petrochemicals, waste products washed into the watercourse and the bag shipped most of the way arround the world. Is dwarfed by say driving a car to Wales to ride a bike. The entire carbon footprint of a carbon fibre bik...

All Goretex waterproof fabrics are of a laminate construction.
I presume he meant the distinction between the 2/2.5/3 layer membrane waterproof fabrics which have a breathable PTFE membrane on a woven outet (and maybe/not an inner layer).

And the DWR treated fabrics?

500g seems reasnoble if it means you can omit having a bag holder and just strap it on? Not sure what the point of the "aero" designation is, the guy who won the national road bike tt title reckons if you can hold the position on the hoods its very marginal compared to a full on tt bike position, ju...

Re: WTF (Perhaps NSFW) Tenuous link to cycling.

Two things spring to mind: Google gives you different search results depending on who you are, i just get a lot of "toe straps" to deal with corns, bunnions and broken toes. Clearly I need to spend more time at Torture Garden. If you search for that image it comes back as a $380 pair of virtual shoe...

Re: What you doing next year?

Why not a 600km audax, and then you should have a Super Randonneur award to your name. No good answer to that. The actual plan is to do the Mille Pennine, but I'm avoiding saying it out loud as that involves commitment! Kinda figure that once you've done two ludicrous days and sleep deprivation has...

Planning to buildup to a 500km audax in 2020, then enter the bearbones 200.

Not sure whats more optimistic, actually completing them or potentially having them to close together for the 'type 2' to wear off the fun part!

Re: On One Whippet

£999 for a full bike when the frame is £599 is either a bargain bike or an expensive frame! Partially I suspect it's to make the full bike look like good value. Which then sells more full bikes to people who were never really going to buy a frame only anyway. Same as Specialized frequently sell the...

Could be worse, the only helemets that ever fit me are bell/661/giro -63cm versions, nothing else gets even halfway over my head!

I'm forever paranoid that that they will change the mould.

Re: Brake, rattle and roll

What Sean said, the pad is pushed against the lip at the front of the calliper under braking, the pin is just there to stop them falling out. The pads are always a bit undersize, feels a bit like a loose headset or worn fork bushings when you rock backwards and forwards with the brake on.

Off center isnt a problem unless your bars taper or bend quickly out of the clamp.

My OH has a bar bag strapped to one of those accessory mounts to keep it forward of all the cables (and its an e-bike so has an extra computer screen).

On the subject of quadlock, i found someone on ebay selling knock off garmin mounts with vhb backing for £4 including a topcap mount! The things putting me off quadlock were the price and the fact it was yet another mount, but this solved both! Just combined it with a cheap phone case. https://rover...

I got one of those out front bar mount things from china, basicly two aluminium legs that clamp the bars and a stub of carbon bar out the front. Swapped the bar for a bit of plastic pipe that was longer. https://www.dhresource.com/600x600/f2/albu/g8/M01/62/D9/rBVaV1yUVlaAOXwjAAJ0Hq1wWc0286.jpg Then ...

What about GBduro? I know it’s a slightly different animal (with more road than the others, for a start) but should it be in the list? The route could be an ITT, but the event isn't, it's 4ITT's back to back with the clock stopping in between and an overall 10 day limit. Different in that those at ...

Decathlon do a rubber bottle boss mount for about £3. I use them on my downtube to hold an extra cage underneath. Just add a wrap of electrical tape arround the middle to prevent it slipping.

Something like an OR Helium bag to give it some volume for the air to circulate?
