Re: Using a smartphone instead of a Bike Computer

I've been using a phone as my only method of navigation since I started doing this kind of thing, including riding accross Turkey and hiking from Mexico to Canada twice. For cycling navigation I've been using the Ridewithgps app. It does require a subscription to use in offline mode though. I've alw...

Re: Amazing survival thingy...

Lucky guy.
A fairly freak accident admittedley but this and a couple of similar incidents I've read about where injured riders have become separated from their bikes has made me wonder if I should be carrying my PLB in my pocket rather than in the top tube bag.

Re: Tell me bout NC500

Glad you've just endorsed that summit for me there Jeff... as it's the Belach ne Baa that I'm primarily going for (plus a few climbs around the Cairgnorms that needs fetching) I don't know if you've done Great Dun Fell up the Radar Dome but I found that much harder than Bealach na Ba. Both done on ...

Re: Tell me bout NC500

I rode bits of it last year along with the Great North Trail and various other stuff. I drew this up last winter. There's a few sections I missed out on last year due to getting Giardia and spending 4 days in Durness.

Never had much success with that stuff. The DWR coating seems to last about 5 minutes before the garment starts to wet-out again. i'd love to hear how you get on with it.

Re: Readers Rides

Like the ECR setup woodsmith! Nice homemade bags, nice stick for tw@tting people with, and quite possibly something to do with your name, but very level and tidy woodpile! :-bd Thanks for the compliments. The big stick was in daily use fighting of Kangal dogs in Eastern Turkey, and the timber was a...

One of the guys from Bikepacking.com used to use an old stem with cut off section of handlebar to create something similar to the SJS item.

As someone who uses multiple power tools all day, every day, I'll take recharging over the rat's nest of power cords and extension leads every time.

Re: Oh, bollocks ...

Universal motorbike tyres like Avon Roadrunners used to have opposing directional arrows depending on whether it was front or rear wheel mounted. I always assumed this was more to do with carcas construction resisting the torque as the tread seemed symetrical/ uni-directional / same in both directio...

Meeting Boners in the wild

In the few years I've been bikepacking around UK trails I've yet to anyone who frequents this forum. When asked if they do most are completely oblivious to its existance. Is there a sticker / sew-on patch / secret handshake to advertise my affiliation to this place?

Re: Any frameprotection tape recommendations?

I've found the Gorilla clear tape to be really durable. But be warned its a bloody nightmare to remove if/when you want to renew it. Comes off in little bits and leaves all the adhesive behind. That requires lots of meths and T-cut to remove. Might go better with a hair dryer but I don't have one. (...

Not available in North America until early September. A couple of months later here maybe? Keep Pedalling in Manchester will probably be your best bet to get some if/when they are available in the UK
