Re: Hebridean Way

Rode it in 2018 over about 12 days North to South against the prevailing wind. If i'd gone in the other direction I could probably have done the whole thing in a few days without pedalling such was the wind. The advantage of going against the wind was the countless showers blew threw in 10 minutes a...

Re: Great Divide Mountain Bike Route - Surly ECR info required

Are you sure you want the ECR? I had a rohloff ECR, it was a great bike in the right place and I enjoyed it, but ultimately it’s quite limited. The low bottom bracket means that your stuck with 3” tyres, I found them slow on tarmac, painfully slow. Which tyres were you running? i've Maxxis chronicl...

Re: 2nd City Divide

Overall it was ok :???: Probably a good 'beginner' route, but it kinda felt like it didnt know what its purpose was. Couldn't agree more. Doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a hairy-arsed bikpacking route or a traditional road route. Rode this in 10 days in mid July from south to north . Far too...

Re: Loch Dionard

Just as a follow up i did this route on the 31st August in dry weather after a few days with no significant rainfall. The Glen Golly track after the Highland 550 turnoff continues to climb a little but is 100% rideable. The decent down to Loch Dionard is steep and very loose in places but again 100%...

Universal Phone mounts

Anyone found a universal phone mount, stem or bar, that is reliable off road.
The VHB d/s tape for the Quadloc isnt compatible with my phone case ( and is crazy expensive for what it is).

Re: E-Bikepacking

One thing that would be really good is standardised chargers and connectors going forwards. I am pretty sure they are all different, although the Specialized Levo is similar to the Fazua but not sure if they will charge each other. But if Bosch, Shimano, Specialized and all other motor brands could...

Re: How often do you take a stove?

Always take one. Not interested in ITT's so for me the physical and psychological benefits far outway the weight penalty. Coming from a long distance hiking background where ultralite is everything and cold soaking food commonplace its worth the extra weight of a stove for the look of envy on their ...

Re: E-Bikepacking

My issue isn't with e-bikes as such, quite the reverse. I beleive anything which reduces the number of single occupancy cars on the road can only be a good thing. My issue with e-bikes on trail is that they could be seen as the thin end of the wedge. Battery technology is leaping forwards and the pe...

I imagine that recharging options severely limit the choice of routes unless carrying multiple battery packs/. Personally I don't think they should be legal off road . An argument could be made for those with a disability. Isn't part of the joy in bikepacking the sense of acheiment in arriving at s...

Re: Wildcamping toxic?

I like the Norwegian model. Camp wherever you want if travelling under your own steam/horseback and all car camping, motorhomes and caravans being restricted to designated sites. I was told by Norwegians decades ago that this was put in place in response to the "invasion" of camper vans/mo...

OK thanks. I'll see if i can spot the differences between the various versions. I'm hoping to be in the area around that time so I might see some riders on trail. I'll be starting and finishing in Aviemore and won't be trying to break any records.

KMC e1 chain? I got about 5000k out of the first one at 0.75% wear and only about half that out of the last one. Really disapointed with the last one, both using ProGold ProLink lube. Changing to Smoove Universal on the next one and reversing the rear sprocket. No noticeable wear on the surly stainl...

Re: can we go on the Hebrides yet?

Should be OK from 15th July Tony. New timetables are online. You can only book 4 weeks in advance though. That means 4 weeks before you leave, you can book the outward trip but then you have to wait however long before you can book your return. Spaces on the ferries are limited due to Social Distan...

Does this apply to camp sites and wild camping? Cant find any specific breakdown.

Monday 23rd Feb 1987 in The Marquee Club, London I saw Maria McKee with her band Lone Justice. It wasn't so much like watching a performance as witnessing a force of nature. I've never seen anyone give so much of themselves on stage and I've never seen anything come close since. Not from that night ...

slippery silnylon bathtub floors and thermarests

The bathtub floor on my Trekkertent Stealth One ( cracking little tent) is super slippery sil nylon and in conjunction with a Thermarest NeoAir X lite produces an almost friction free surface which, unless the chosen camp spot is billiard table flat, sees me gliding rapidly off to one side/end. Has ...
