Re: January's Virtual Winter Event 2021 (Covid lockdown edition) Jan 9th and 10th

Sorry if these are dumb questions.
What sort of maximum radius from home should the Grid Points be at?
Is the intention to visit them all all in one ride?
Maximum and minimum overall distance to complete?

Re: Ortliebs new forkpack

Tubus Vega is available for approx half the the cost of the "t" rack for the same weight. No idea how much someone would charge for half a dozen braze-ons.
Or theres this home made adaption: https://bikepacking.com/gear/tubus-vega ... extra-h20/

Re: Ortliebs new forkpack

Would be interesting to try on one of those minimalist rear racks that have three bolt holes on the legs. A good way to add a little more capacity for a multi-week bikepacking adventure, and some of interest for a future trip to Mongolia. This rack https://bikepacking.com/news/ratking-t-rack/ Assum...

Re: Ortliebs new forkpack

According to the Bikepacking.com review they won't work if fork mounts are angled forward/back.

Apart from that they look OK.

Re: Is next year a write off already?

Just had a quick scan of this thread and no one has mentioned "herd immunity" In the early press conference back in March one of the experts got their ass kicked when he used the words "herd immunity", but it took Spanish flu 2 years to go away in 3 waves and it only disappeared...

Re: Dark winter nights question

I've found that it's a lot more difficult to find camp spots in the dark and its not too stealthy doing so and then setting uo camp with a bright flashlight. I prefer to set up camp at dusk for this reason. In reply to OP. Make sure your bag / extra layers are up to the expected temperatures and enj...

Durafix rods

Anyone used durafix aluminium welding rods? I fancy having a play and making a minimalist front rack/bag support.
The video makes it look so easy

Re: Handlebar Harness

. I’ve been using a Wildcat bar harness, and sometimes it does its job (not catching the front mudguard when the suspension dips), and other times it does NOT, and I can’t quite fathom what causes it to drop. I’ve studied the way the straps are, underneath the front arch of the fork, back again to ...

I iinterperated the option to do it indoors was to allow those under strict Covid-19 restrictions to take part. Hats off to anyone who can do either in my book.

Re: long term rohloff users please.

8years, 4 frames, zero problems so yes. Just wish they would design a better shifter setup that could be retro fitted. Electronic would be perfect as having twin cables arcing out of a gripshift makes bar roll fitting complicated. I use a pair of v brake noodles that tighten the bend but the fricti...

Re: Which filter?

I've always used a Sawyer Squeeze. I've used it to filter water from cow ponds in New Mexico where the water was poop soup with no ill effects. Yes the filter soon slows in flow rate but regular back flushing keeps it going fine. Yes the bags have a reputation for being a bit fragile although I've n...

os Maps and rights of way

During this never-ending pandemic I've been spending countless hours plotting routes on RWGPS using the OS maps available on Bing maps. On the below map the route shown by green diamonds ( OS key = recreational route) but has no indication to say whether it's a footpath or bridleway. Is there any wa...

Re: How do you support the (adopted) local economy?

I do sometimes feel guilty about not pumping much money into the local economy of places that I pass through on the bike but I much prefer to wild camp and cook my own food in camp. Sometimes local businesses don't make it all that easy to support them either. Being routinely charged £12 - £15 for 3...

Re: Southern Europe sleeping bag

I used a 3 degree bag ( Mountain equipment Helium 400) with a Thermarest Xlite in Turkey in September ( 30+ degree daytime temps) . Was often warm enough in just a silk liner but was glad of the bag on several nights at 2000meters. Was glad of having a tent too as I had wild boar around me on severa...

Nice work, I assume you made the rest of your luggage as it matches. How do you find the G hooks? Do they stay tight, and how easy is it to pull the free end to tighten them up? Also, what bars are they? Thanks. Yes I made the other bags. There are more pics on my imgur page. The G hooks work reall...
