Re: Fontainebleau Babypacking

I was there 3 days ago.
It is fun riding hard dirt trails then turning a corner and then trying to ride through sand for 200m, then back to dirt.

I hate seeing photos of a big fried breakfast, late in the evening.

At least I can still go out for a pint.

Re: South Downs Way in a storm.

I made it out. I had to bury myself deep in the woods to keep out of the wind. It was amazing how the wind could still pass through so many trees. Unfortunately I was surrounded by ash trees, which have a tendancy to panic and drop their branches when frightened. Widow makers. Met a few bikepackers ...

Thanks for the replies.
I'm tall, so I guess I will hold off until I see one. I have a Hilleberg Akto as my lightest tall person's tent. But it is 1.6kg.

Re: New Luna Solo

Can anyone tell me if these tents will fit a lanky person? Estimated lankyness? The internal length looks good on paper but it angles down quite a lot at each end. Ps. My brand new, never used, army Gortex bag arrived today. £40. It's huge, but I am not short. And at that price, easily cut down and ...

Re: Cassette tool - ways to hold it?

Arrived. It is tiny. Fits in the puncture repair kit. It is weightless. On my scales. Fitted. Hard knock on the pedal. Scunch! As the cassette ring loosened. Brilliant. This is now in the tool bag. Out goes the heavy tool that still needs a big spanner and whip. It also has a 3.3 spoke key on the en...

Downs Link. Wey South Path.

I am thinking about doing a loop from the South Coast (Shoreham), up to Guildford on the Downs Link Path, bivi for the night, back via the Wey South Path and along the South Downs Way for a short stretch, to finish. Can anyone help? A good bivi spot or area near Guildford? I'll use a hammock, so a s...

South Downs Way in a storm.

I try to do this trip every year. This time I chose to go out when a storm was due, as I thought it would be fun. I wasn't dissapointed. I was supposed to start at Salisbury but train stikes ended that idea. So I set off in the evening from Winchester stopping at the 888 Chinese takeaway. The House ...

Which Gorilla tape is recommended? I have the Gorilla grey duct tape but I have heard that the Gorilla clear tape is the one to get.

Re: Clarendon Way. Salisbury to Winchester?

Thanks Mariner.
I don't remember bars from last year, maybe things have changed. So I might have to cycle round on the road. Cheers.

I forgot about the Monarch Way. Will have a look.

Depending on rail strikes, I should be heading off tomorrow. Heatwave and thunderstorms. Should be fun.

Re: Clarendon Way. Salisbury to Winchester?

With the train strikes, I will be lucky if I can get to Sailsbury. To Winchester is unaffected. I want to avoid gpx.ing and maybe just go for it. The walkers route out of Winchester is interesting. I don't know the laws but I have been told that - It is a public bridleway. To stop cyclists, a bylaw ...

Clarendon Way. Salisbury to Winchester?

I am going to do the South Downs Way this week. There are supposed to be some thunderstorms arriving so I want to be out for that. I have done the SDW many times before but this time I want to extend the route. I have heard that the Clarendon Way, Salisbury to Winchester, is well sign posted and no ...

Re: Rear wheel recommendation?

I was going to get the Hope, but there are reviews of the rim not being tough enough. I also sent off the warranty to Mavic. If they say yes, then I am stuck with two good back wheels, which I don't need. So, I took a gamble, hoping Mavic will come through, and bought a cheapy back wheel. If they do...

Re: Rear wheel recommendation?

Voodoo - I've got other Mavic wheels and I am very happy with them. But I have lost confidence in this one. I do a lot of long, remote trips abroad. This failed without warning. Too risky to try again.

Hope Pro4 looks like the best option. I've got the evo pro 2 in 26ers.
Did yours come with tubless tape or will I have to sort that out separately.

Rear wheel recommendation?

I have posted separately regarding my freehub failure. So I need to buy - today - a rear wheel. Present wheel - Mavic XA Elite 29er. UST. Non boost. I just spoke with Mavic, I am going to put a warranty claim in which will take a few weeks. They recommend the Mavic Deemax elite as a replacement. But...

Freehub explosion.

Freehub failure. This happened last night on the South Downs. Going up a very steep section. The pawls are all free and clean apart from bits of broken metal mush. They seem undamaged but I have't tried removing them. Blew a hole through the hub. Carl Gustaf style. Unrepairable. Anyone had a similar...
