New restaurant at Col de Tende.
Just wanted to ask if any of the Torino to Nice riders tried out the new restaurant at the fort on Col de Tende? I was there a couple of weeks ago. Staff were a bit scruffy. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1854/43730366955_a6a7b808fd_c.jpg 20180820_143551 by Hola Siesta , on Flickr https://farm2.stat...

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1857/44589210732_a76da1fdae_c.jpg 20180910_164646 by Hola Siesta , on Flickr Just spent a couple of stunning days fly fishing in the Verdon Gorge. I caught a couple of wild trout but they were too small to eat. I had my firebox just in case. I think I must have scared...

Re: Sussex bivi a month 2018
I don't have my OS maps with me but will check out the spots later. I have stopped at the official bivi spot a few times, only for a break. It is nice, but I prefer to sleep where I won't get disturbed. It's handy with Amberley cafe, station and pub only a mile away. But Houghton Wood is also close,...

Re: Sussex bivi a month 2018
Anyone got any good bivi locations to share?
I usually use the yew tree forest on top of Old Winchester Hill Fort.
Houghton Wood near Amberley.
Chanctonbury Ring is my favourite, great views, but it can get windy up there.
And a few small patches of woodland, but they are too small to have names.

Re: Do I need a bigger one?
Interesting. A larger rotor will allow for a greater torque to be applied. Force x distance. Nearly all modern & quality disc brakes will "lock" a rotor very easily. Almost instantly. This means that the kinetic energy being transferred into heat no longer goes through the rotor but th...

Re: Do I need a bigger one?
I was under the impression that rotor size was irrelevant when it came to stopping. The brake pad and the rotor surface that it touches are the same regardless of diameter. A larger brake pad surface will stop you better. A larger rotor dissipates heat better due to its larger surface area. So it is...

Keep an eye out for a cheap fly fishing rod. Light, strong and can be taken apart. Just cut the handle off.

No more cross country routes in the Alpes!
I have just picked up my 3rd mountain bike map from a tourist office in the French Alpes. These maps have all the downhill routes and usually a huge route for the cross country riders. And these have always been pretty big challenging rides. Some 50-80km. This year's maps no longer call them 'extrem...

Downs Link is a nice disused railway track. Lots of dog walkers. Cafe half way. Shoreham end was closed during the summer for construction work.

Had lunch at Fort Central. It is busy up here. Met a German doing the TN now.
Not descending the switchbacks. There is mountain bike trail down from Fort Tabourde. Excellent single track.

Re: 1m long carbon pole - 11g
Thanks for the tips.
Yes, for a tarp. One metre height. I chose 6mm because it seemed stiff enough in the shop. But I haven't tried it in the field. It won't be for gusty Welsh nights, more summer Alps. But if it works then I will get a thicker one for the UK.
Cheers.

Shatters!
I have 6mm carbon pole. I haven't cut it yet. Heatshrink?
Can I just cut it with a hacksaw and use it or is there more to it than that?
Cheers.

Re: Bikeflypackfishing?
I bought a cheapo Shakespeare 7ft rod just to strap to the bike without a case. At £35, not worried if it gets bust. The rod cases are too heavy to use. I was planning on riding down and bivi/fly fishing in the Gorge du Verdon, France, a couple of days ago. But found out at the last minute that bike...

Re: WTD: cheap bivi bag
Army Surplus. Brand new off Amazon. £40-45. Full Gortex, which is the best. Most complain that it is too heavy. But at that price you can trim it down and seam seal it. Everyone is searching for lightness, but only full Gortex really works as a bivi material. Avoid non-breathable floors if you move ...

No links. But just get the mini IGN paper map. Where are you based? Cul de Chien. Huge sand pit area for the adults to play in and some great boulders for the kids. Mare aux Evées. North end. Nothing major but a nice place to search out. Café in forest. 1km east of Barbizon. Point de vue des Gorges ...

Pour & store bags?
What are these? Is it just a new name for freezer/sandwich/gorp zip bags or are they different?
