Re: The post man's been ...
A second hand macpac eVent bivi bag for £68 weighing in at 560g in an exciting orange. I have pushed the expected use limits of my Terra Nova survival bivi, and it is close to bits. Entire footbox delaminated, plus plenty along, all taped seams have came apart. Still works as a lightweight draft pro...

Re: If we close up for a bit...
Depends how you interpret the if everyone statement. If everyone did that fringe thing that they like and can borderline justify with the wind blowing in the correct direction then, yes that would be too much. If it is everyone who wants to bivi once or twice a month, does that then it would be fine...

The way I see my social responsibility is primarily to not catch and unwittingly spread the virus, and secondarily to be in good health. To give my immune system the best chance of fighting it without outside assistance. To understand how not to catch/spread the virus, you need to understand how it ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2020.
After reevaluating what it was that first attracted me to sleeping out, I went with a back to basics set up. I hoped to relight my connection with nature and clear my head of complications. Part of this nature connection felt appropriate to cook by fire. I cheated and made my chilli lentil burger mi...

I remember my first night out
Seeing as no unpredictable journeys with interesting plot twists are happening at the moment, but my desire for storytelling is still there, I am going to recount my first ever trip and see if the memory can rekindle my passion. Maybe it will prove a useful resource for bikepacking curious people on...

Re: Something for the coffee snobs.
There must be some mathematical relationship that keeps the volume the same for a given weight regardless of individual partical size as long as the particals are all the same size. and approximate shape. Quickly thinking about it I have managed to convince myself that this would be true. The ratio...

Re: Using my waterproof jacket as back up tarp
I would look at having a jacket made of the same material as tarps. Yeah I think this is what I would do, if I find it in any way useful and beneficial in the real world. I would probably make my own jacket as it my requirements are different enough to anything on offer, and I enjoy making things. ...

Re: Using my waterproof jacket as back up tarp
Yep keeping the bag hole clear is the name of the game. Tried a flying v and indeed it did give relatively comprehensive protection. It was a right wiggle to get in and out of the tarp though. I had to get into my bivi bag then worm my way under, compared with the other set up which I could get in a...

Re: Using my waterproof jacket as back up tarp
So here is the proof of concept using pebbles as tie outs. I had not considered the possibility of the sleeves being curtains, but think I would leave them draping as that tension would be fighting against the stitching and 2 more pegs makes a significant contribution to this set up. https://live.st...

Using my waterproof jacket as back up tarp
So the use case is clear forecast, only taking a bivi bag, then the heavens open and it would be a grim night. My waterproof is always packed anyway, and I wouldn't be using it while sleeping, and it is waterproof. This is primarily a raincoat and occasional tarp, compared to the poncho tarps which ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2020.
So I was in no mood to write this up as it was just not a fun time. It reminded me of what I was missing, and the ridiculous lengths I was going to in some vague attempt to stimulate something, anything, my normal is that dull. Also I felt that it was a failure as I bailed before dawn. Anyway, bad t...

Re: Bivvy a month 2020.
So I will check in for this month as having been out. I'm not so convinced by the it's better than nothing mindset. I've tried different set ups ranging from just a bivi bag and quilt, to 3m x 3m tarp with groundsheet and duvet, but my heart just has not been in it. These tastes just make me hungry....

Re: So it's come to this ...
Since my garden bivi at the start of the month, I have kept the 8g stove outside. I use it for breakfast and instead of a kettle whenever I want a cuppa. I find that the limiting factor is starting time critical tasks as soon as possible, then filling in the rest of the prep from there.

Escaping "it all" Starved of a physical challenge, and struggling to imagine any exploration that could take place on my limited route, I decided the answer was to take more stuff. I was going to trial a plan that has been in the dream box for a while, move house by bike. I made a list of ...

Re: Virtual BAM ... you know you want to
What about a MasterChef competition? The obvious hurdle we need to get over is judging taste. I suggest each competitor has to describe the meal to voice over standard, and everyone else decides how good it tasted based purely on the description. I'm sure we could cook up some bikepacking restrictiv...

Our work from home coms was discord, designed mainly for gaming but fits the bill. They have a limit of 50 and do text, voice, or video. Like gaming you can have one person Livestream video with everyone else piping up and commenting on it.

Battling the evil turbo
I had heard horror stories of the turbo. You would ride for hours and only 90 seconds would pass, you got unbearably sweaty, and obnoxiously loud. It was a necessary evil of winter training, but was most certainly evil. My first attempt confirmed this. I tried to combat the boredom with heavy metal,...

I will say that I also have no clear picture of what it is really like, but warn against observational bias when you point out non social distancing. You cannot see most of the people doing it properly, because they are doing it properly.
