Thanks all
Sean - I think I'd actually tape the SD card in place if I was using a similar GPS again. The metal flap on the model I borrowed (Dakota 20) was very loose and it was only the weight of the batteries holding the card in place.

Re: First ITT attempt: Cairngorms Loop
True! And BTW, my interest in ITTs was much inspired by your blogposts on the HT550 and other routes so thank you
I would love to give the HT550 a crack next year, but realise it's 3x length of the Cairngorms Loop!

Good luck on the group start. I couldn't make the September date this year which is why I went solo.

Thanks! Not sure what's going on with the photos. I can see them and the JPGs are sitting on my website. I'll log out of Wordpress and see what happens but they should be public. First ITT attempt: Cairngorms Loop
A couple of years’ ago I made a podcast episode about bikepacking, riding from Beauly to Kyle of Lochalsh via Glen Affric with Lee Craigie. ( http://mountainpodcast.com/episode/18-where-the-road-runs-out/ ) Lee was brilliant - of course - but bikepacking as a way of travel completely captured my ima...

Re: Help out a GPS dunce....
Thanks Bob, that does explain the other mystery. I’d figured out that the file was called bike hike course on the Garmin, but had no idea why.

Re: Help out a GPS dunce....
Just re-uploaded that file (which is a Track) and used the Where To? icon to load it. Works fine and the whole file loads.
It was the Route/Track terminology that had me confused. Thanks for guiding me towards the solution!

The original file was sent to me by a friend, but no idea where he got it from. Here it is: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz80RwJxb40xYXAxZjZzSEVWSkJiX09jVWRJRS04LXBCYnpB/view?usp=sharing Would be interested to hear what happens when you load it. Almost certain it'll be user error on my part. THa...

Re: Help out a GPS dunce....
I put it in Garmin\GPX. This worked with the local loop I loaded in there, although it was only a 6km route.
Then I selected the Route Planner icon on the GPS unit and selected my Route. There's also a Where To? icon, but I didn't use that.

Re: Help out a GPS dunce....
When it was a Track it wouldn't show up in the "Route Planner" section on the GPS and so I couldn't load the GPX file.

Re: Help out a GPS dunce....
It was a track, but I'd converted it to a route using Viewranger and exported it as a new GPX file. Would that work? Or does Garmin need a special route format?

Help out a GPS dunce....
I rode the Cairngoms Loop last weekend and borrowed a friend's Garmin Dakota 20. I've never used a GPS unit before but I managed to load the Open Street Map as a base map and a GPX file. I tried it out on a local loop and all seemed fine. Then I loaded up the Caingorm Loop GPX file and set off from ...

Re: New Bivibag
Day 2 of a failed ridgeway double, Easter 2018. I had to bail to a commercial campsite to be able to stand it their free showers until I stopped shivering... When I was in my Borah was the only time in 48 hours when I wasn't get wet from the constant heavy rain but the tarp provides enough coverage...

Alpkit Ordos 2? 1.3Kg and £255. Not used that particular model but I've had good experiences with other Alpkit tents.

Re: Custom Frame Bag
I had the same issue with my Alpkit Stingray. I measured it out exactly to fit the frame, but it was definitely a bit slack when fitted. I'm sure Alpkit followed the template precisely, but I should have ordered it a a couple of centimetres shorter so it stretched to fill the space. That said, it's ...

Re: What's your recommendation for a tarp/bivy combo?
That's useful useful info, thanks - I will check out the slippy thread :) I'm looking for a bag with more of an emphasis on breathability than waterproofness, but sounds like the Borah bags might be designed for drier climates than Scotland. And cheers Teetosugars, will have a look at the Bespoke Ul...

Re: Trossachs Camping Management Zone
If you’re bivying you won’t have a problem as the bylaw only applies to shelters (tents or tarps), so a bivy doesn’t count. But to be honest you’d be very unlucky to see a ranger, especially if you’re discreet. I live in the Trossachs, so i’m constantly roaming around these tracks on my bike and I’v...

What's your recommendation for a tarp/bivy combo?
Will be used for quick overnighters and hopefully a race next year. Midge protection a must. At the moment the tarp and ultralight bivy from Borah Gear seem a good combo - I see they've been recommended a lot over the last few years. Are there any small-scale manufacturers in the UK making similar g...
