Re: Topical Article By A Woman Who Bothies Alone

I do understand the issue here, and maybe not as a woman but as a father of a 19 year old daughter who loves cycling. I think we all need to be careful here as this can get out of hand and make things worse. Just because you are a man does not mean you cannot be sexually assaulted, and I was when I ...

Re: Clunky fork

Try turning the bars to 90degrees and then do the same, is the clunk still there?

That way you can eliminate the disc pads.

Re: Who plans their routes?

Hi I tend to plan a general route to include things I consider of interest, not always on a GPS though. But it really depends where I am, locally not at all, if I was away from my locale then certainly, just as a back up if things go wrong and I need to limp back to a road, or the shortest distance,...

Hammock/tent

Not sure if this has been discussed before but was interested in opinions? I suspect it isn't lightweight but has some interesting features, I like the ability to be able to zip two together, and the flexibility of a hammock. But is it trying to be too much and failing at everything? https://www.cru...

Re: MoJo

I think this is always a difficult time of year anyway, and the current lockdown isn't helping. I sometimes sit on the trainer watching a film but that is sooooo boring. I am not sure it's loss of mojo, just reality, I went out for a long ride last weekend and my bike looked like stig of the dump. I...

Re: Taking a knife to a gunfight.

Good question. I have a number of bicycles that I use for all sorts of things. I have a gravel bike a Genesis Datum, and I only really use it for my daily commute to work, it is a great bicycle but I have used it to off road and to carry stuff and I love how light it is, but the carbon fibre forks l...

Cable entry grommet type thing?

I want to make a hole in my top tube bag to run a cable through for cables and charging duties, I am not too worried about it being waterproof as it will be tucked away somewhere underneath. Does anyone have any suggestions where to find the type that certain jackets have, like a cross cut in a rubb...

Re: Simplest/cheapest way to increase the 'cold-temp' of spd boots

I have a pair of wool insoles in my SPD boots, seem to work, just make sure you still have room to wiggle your toes as too tight and it will get cold. I get mine from here: https://joestoes.co.uk/ I also use a pair of running gaiters when there is a chance of water entering the top and wicking down ...

Re: Vittoria Terreno G2.0 MTB Tyre

Hi, I have one which I sometimes use as a rear summer tyre. I haven't been brave enough to put it on the front though, but I guess it depends on the conditions you are riding in. I have a mezcal on the front and rear in winter and sometimes if it's a lot of road or very dry I may consider the terren...

I read this a while back in the Guardian. Holidaymakers or online shoppers who buy items from the EU that are valued at more than £390 will have to pay customs duties, the government has revealed. VAT and handling fees may also apply on some items, while parcels may be held up in post offices until ...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

I bought two of the lidl down jackets at £11.99 each, one has a hood and one doesn't. I am impressed with them, they are quite thin and best used as a layer, or summer evening type use, but for the price outstanding, they have few frills like elastic in the waist or zips on pockets, but they also do...

Re: I want a camera.

The only thing is you need to ask yourself is what is it for? It will not protect you and can create a false sense of security. I used a go-pro on my daily commute to work and was fine until my wife had a look and she was so shocked at the bad driving that she told me in no uncertain terms I was not...

Re: Best trail / multitool of all time?

I have come to the conclusion that very few multi-tools are really any good and most are simply compromises. That said I use a Crank brothers m10, I have a Park Tool CT5 as I just can't get on with chain tools on multitools. I also carry a pair of Park Tools TL-6.2 tyre levers as they are seriously ...

Re: BPing Ireland: Tell me everything!?

Unfortunately there is simply nothing for "off road" cycling in Ireland, regardless of wheel size, outside of these few bike parks. I remember a good few years back taking my brand new BMW GS over with my wife and thinking we should do the sights. We managed to get to the top of the Gap of...

Re: BPing Ireland: Tell me everything!?

Ireland is different. There are no rights of way as such anywhere, and although you will probably be fine bivvy'ing in any of the wide open expanses, don't take it for granted. That said there are cycle routes opening all the time, but they are the disused railway line type and certainly not off-roa...

Re: What Wheelset Components

Normally the DT Swiss rims come with both the nipples and the washers. They are special ones designed to do away with the normal eyelet re-enforcement and spread the load better. Need a female torx driver to start them off. That said I've used normal nipples and I'm not dead yet. I am using a XM521 ...

Re: Favourite bike of 'all time'?

I think the first bike that really meant something was the first I bought with paper round money, a Raleigh pro burner, which got stolen as they all did, but I did get that returned by the police about 6months later, I still have it hanging in the workshop. Whilst I had it I discovered freedom, and ...

Re: Ireland - south/west - suggestions?

I have a house in Ireland, and honestly Stuart is correct, very few ROW's. That said there are some good tracks and on the most part the little lanes can be pretty car free. It is changing though with some off road routes, which in Ireland simply means car free. The scenery can be breath-taking. htt...

Re: Ever built a no expense spared bike?

I think that it's always a compromise to what works best. That's not to say that good stuff is cheap, but as others have said is XTR really better than XT? The trick is to buy wisely, and I love buying good stuff second hand within reason. But it is stuff that I have worked out is best for me and I ...

This Guy certainly knows a thing or two about metal fabrication.

He is bending rods around wooden formers, which may work for you.

If not then just look at some of his bike frame making!

King Alfreds Way and more

There is a write up of the King Alfred's Way in todays Guardian (Sat 31st).

Does mention a few alternatives, must say I was surprised to see it in a mainstream newspaper, and it made me smile when it mentions bikepacking panniers, which seems to make sure it avoids arguments!
