Hi Burty in Cannock Chase

Hi Burty,

Tiredness + slight initial confusion at what you were on about + rusty social skills = probably not quite as chatty a reply as I should have given you! Anyway, good to see a fellow 'boner in the wild. Hope you had a nice morning. Cheers, Tom.

Re: Face Masks.

Had two items on my panic buy list. Number 1 was a trailshot in case the water supply goes down (might also be useful for bikepacking). Got that no problem. Number 2 was some nice whisky to replace the bottle I finished yesterday. Was less successful with that. Not that there wasn't any in asda, jus...

Re: The story behind your BB name (and whats your usual form of address)

Mine is ported from STW where it was originally chosen around the time hidden motors in race bikes started to be rumoured. That combined with my general mechanical clumsiness and mucking about on bikes having replaced my youthful dabbling with various things led to the birth of mechanicaldope. Or To...

Conversely I am usually a medium/large. Brought a Large featherlight and it was like a tent. Huge. Couldn't get a featherlight in medium so brought a medium reign. Much better but definitely not an athletic cut.

I'm about 5'10 and 11 stone.

Mini pork pies :-bd I also enjoy calling in at the Spar and buying, a packet of corn beef, a packet of tortilla wraps and some crisps. I then retire to somewhere quiet and make corn beef and crisp wraps ... lovely. To be fair, that sounds amazing! Normally have a corninsh in the bag for 1st days lu...

Bikepacking Food & Snacks

When choosing snacks for bikepacking I normally aim for something near the 500 calories per 100g mark that are relatively dense. Usually end up taking salted peanuts, peperarmi and dark chocolate covered Marzipan. Was thinking of taking something different for the winter event so wondering if anyone...

Just been reading up on wheel building and found that spokes work in compression rather than tension. That being the case, how does a flexible spoke do anything other than provide a placebo piece of mind?

Try and get a copy of Jobst Brandt’s Wheel Book. I think it’s out of print but when I read it years ago it really helped me start building good wheels. Found a pdf of this. Really good read. Didn't realise that wheels worked by compressing the lower spokes rather than by the hub hanging from the up...

Right.. All ordered. Black 274mm DT Comps with Black Proloc nips. Let's just hope I didnt muck up the length calculations. Rose bikes BTW were by far the cheapest, even with a substantial amount of postage on top.

Thanks. Guess it's only a fiver or so for new nips so probably worthwhile using new ones.
