Re: Short vs long pull brakes
I sometimes feel that my MTB cable discs outperform my drop bar ones but have no evidence for it. I always assumed this is due to the tyre on a MTB having a greater friction [and the brake i usuually applied at less speed] with the ground so you can brake harder without skidding...I have no evidenc...

Re: Short vs long pull brakes
Thanks James.
I’m not looking to mismatch levers/callipers.
I just need new levers and have a choice of road or MTB callipers to fit.
I sometimes feel that my MTB cable discs outperform my drop bar ones but have no evidence for it.
Mainly it was just a thought exercise.

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.
Essentially what I did when I ‘rode’ the Annapurna circuit trek with a proper MTB. Or as you’d call it, judging from the Stooge above, a gravel bike That's definately a gravel route in my books (been there too). There's even a track to follow. No. I'm thinking of such: Screenshot_20210131-101145_In...

Short vs long pull brakes
If you had a short pull drop bar brake lever vs a long pull drop bar brake lever operating their respective cable disc callipers (say TRP Spyke vs Spyre or Avid BB7 road vs MTB). Could you expect one to outperform the other? Or would matching the right lever with the right calliper mean there’d be n...

Re: Jones truss fork on another bike ?
Except looking like funky scaffolding, what does a truss fork achieve that any other rigid fork doesn’t (if made to the same dimensions)?

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.
When I think about the terrain I usually find myself in when trekking, I'm mostly quite happy to be without my bike. And surely a hybrid would only survive when carried all the way without ever touching the ground. Essentially what I did when I ‘rode’ the Annapurna circuit trek with a proper MTB. O...

Re: The Wessex Way Trail.
Like a lot of long distance trails in this part of the world good riding conditions exist in a pretty narrow window. Knee deep clag or waist high nettles is often the basic choice. The trails need to dry off from winter but you need to ride them before the undergrowth goes feral in mid to late sprin...

Re: Veer belt drive.
Thanks Stephen. They only do the equivalent of 40t/19t chainring/sprocket so the smallest gear would be larger than I want, running 36t/19t at the moment and sometimes wish for lower. One major concern is like you pointed out - once it’s fitted it has to stay put and I guess the belt would be vulner...

Re: Veer belt drive.
Yeah, noted. It’ll be on Fargo, I’ll take the risk. Gates don’t need to know it’s an old Fargo. It’s not exactly a light flexible frame. A snubber is recommended for Rohloff anyway.

Veer belt drive.
I’ve long wanted to convert my Rohloff to belt drive. The pandemic and the wonderful chance to work almost continuous 12hour shifts since Christmas has bumped up my funds so I’m going to go for it. My original thought was to get a seat stay splitter fitted +/- a paint job and then run with a Gates b...

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.
FWIW my gravel bike does have flared drops at a higher level than any other drop bar i have ever used and yes it gives far more control than standard drops but I think it will be a while before DH racers uses them or an xc racer for that matter YMMV but never going to happen for me. Its just not a ...

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.
don't really get what drop bar MTBs give you over an MTB with loops or similar bars with multiple positions. This its deliberatedly making your bike worse i know some of you like it but nothing will ever persuade me to put drop bars n a mtb I once met someone on a tarmac route on a drop bar fat bik...

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.
The front end ugliness can be resolved with a tt bag imo. Both my Krampus and Fargo have ungainly front ends like that. Put a tt bag in place and you don’t really notice.

Re: 28 inch tyre question.
28” = 29er = 700c  They all fit 622mm rims. The designation comes from the nominal diameter of the tyre when fitted and inflated. Popular in countries like Germany 28” is an older designation for (mostly) touring and town bike tyres. Interestingly (or more likely not!) a narrow 28” tyre eg. 2...

Re: Exposure blaze mount?
If the mount is a rubber band jobbies like on a RedEye you can mount it on a seat stay. I’ve done that by folding a pad of inner tube which I then Gorilla taped in place - the mount then sits well enough to hold the light at a suitable angle.

Re: Tarp Fabric
As Stu says the waterproofing of canvas comes from the fabric swelling as it wets and closing the pores in the material. Canvas or polycotton tents will often leak a little when they are brand new or if they have become excessively dried - until they’ve had a good soaking. Parachute fabric is pretty...

Just going back to the hipster issue - surely, they all use paper maps already? Do they not favour the 'traditional' - Brooks, Carradice, etc? Also, I'm wondering   whether it's fair game to take the p1ss out of hipsters because I'm assuming that (a) no one believes themselves to be one (...
