Re: Where is everyone?

As I said, nuance is difficult to read in plain text. To those who are in the know things have a different meaning to those who aren’t. And yes I do think there are examples of wild assumption about different groups of people made on threads here at times. Do I think there is overt bullying? No. But...

Re: Where is everyone?

Read through some old threads and see the language that is used about 'those people aren't like us', 'we wouldn't leave litter', 'they don't go far from their cars', 'people like  that aren't proper wildcampers', that is othering. Hang on, I'm just trying to get this right in my head ... does...

Re: Where is everyone?

Othering is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labeled as not fitting in within the norms of a social group. It is an effect that influences how people perceive and treat those who are viewed as being part of the in-group versus those who are seen as being part of the o...

Re: What Wheelset Components

Go wide if you’re going plus. 3” tyres deserve a wide rim - i40 or more to really plump up and ride well at low pressure. You could always double up with a set of narrow(er) rims later. If you go for carbon rims and a sensible tyre like Chronicles or Ranger Light the weight penalty of a plus set up ...

Summary of my research on nursing in Ireland is this: There are more Irish nurses working in the other English speaking countries than Ireland  Pay at grades 6 and lower is better on paper but cost of living is higher. You need to pay for health insurance which is not cheap :???: Don’t expect...

Re: Do you strava?

Yes, I Strava pretty much everything, but I don’t let it rule my life. Unless I’m doing something out of the ordinary I don’t look at it too much. I’m on here way more. I will admit to never doing a 98, 147, or 199km ride anymore when I could round up the numbers but that’s no bad thing as far a I’m...

Re: BPing Ireland: Tell me everything!?

Come January 1st it's all going to get a lot more complicated too. In fact, at this point, we've no idea just how complicated. Oh, and they are also likely to have restrictions on travel from areas of high Covid-19 incidence. No as complicated as all that. UK and RoI citizens have reciprocal rights...

I thought Alpkit got theirs from someone else. Pretty sure they were just rebranded and they were JTEK - not 100 % certain Think it’s this. I had one for a while. From other peoples experience I had an outlier - mine was cheap garbage that had all sorts of problems. Alpkit being Alpkit fully refund...

Re: Dynamo Hubs

With reference to how much power you can produce MTB bikepacking my experience is fairly good given the obvious limitations of 29+ wheels and slow speeds. One example would be BB200 2018. During the day I kept an iPhone 5 with a really old battery at 100% charge whilst recording Strava and taking ph...

I got a SON for a transcontinental tour nearly 20years ago. It did 16,000 km straight off in it’s first 10 months and many thousands more since. It’s been submerged, frozen and baked. It’s been airplane baggage. It’s been built into a number of wheels. Recently it’s been on my commuter bike parked o...

Conti Mud King: They’re narrow though, only 1.8 for the XC 29er version. They do a wider one as well, labelled DH. 2.3 x 650b available. I like the narrow one a lot, it kind of digs down to find some firmer ground under the loose stuff. Very good on Dartmoor slop.I rode the Wessex Ridgeway with them...

Re: Is the 100mm travel hardtail dead?

Isn’t the important number the a-c measurement rather than the travel. Afaik quite a few 120 and 100mm forks come up with the same a-c and are therefore interchangeable. At least that’s what I found when looking for a 100mm fork last year.

Today I managed to bend my alternator dropout in a fairly serious manner. I was left with very few working gears and the very scary possibly of killing an expensive rear mech, while fiddling with the gears in an attempt to get some working gears a bloke on a touring bike stopped to offer help. What do they do to bamboo, to make it low odour? I like it in cooler weather. I thought it was over hyped Viscose . Steady. Bamboo fabric is considered to have mythical qualities in these parts. Despite the fact that modern clothing labeled as being made from bamboo is usually viscose rayon, a fibe...

Re: Base layer wisdom

As much as I favour natural materials I can’t get along with wool as a base layer for cycling. I find it just gets soggy. It’s warm enough when I keep moving but causes too much chilling when stopped. The environmental credentials of bamboo fabric produced as fine cloth are pretty dubious so i steer...

What am I missing here? Outside of tier 3 you can travel for leisure and stay overnight with your household or alone. Just not in other people’s houses or hotels. You can social with up to 6 people outside. Nothing wrong with a bivi. As far as I am aware we are not in any of the tiers in England at...

I’d be a little wary of drop bars set that high. I set my Fargo like that and in reality found that I only had I properly usable hand position- in the hooks. (Plus the aero bars) 24hrs on an ITT left me with numb fingers on one had for weeks. Setting the bars a bit lower opened more positions for m...
